Information on romance scams and scammers.

I have been talking with a guy who claims to be an American soldier. We have been talking for about a month. He has never asked for money or asked for anything really. He told he thinks he is falling in love with me. Never professed his love for me just said he is falling in love with me. A part of me feels like it is a scam but I honestly don't know. Can someone help me find out before this goes on any farther?

NAME: JAMES ALBERT SCHULTZ
AGE: 48
BIRTH: July 20, 1965, Providence RI
PARENTS: Bruce and Wanda Schultz. Father died when he was 6 years old.
Children: Logan, Parker, and Brady
MARITIAL: Widow for 5 years, breast cancer
RANK: Lieutenant Colonel, promoted January 11th 2013
STATIONED: Fort Carson, CO
UNIT: 4th Division Infantry
YAHOO: j.schultz73@yahoo.com

I have done research on the second day of talking to him and found out about the Military dating scam. He has never done any of the things that people are posting. I don't know how to find out if this is real or not. He is overseas right now. Something just doesn't feel right. Maybe I am just paranoid because of finding out about the scam, I don't know. I have pictures he sent me but I don't know how to upload them on here. Either he is real or I have met a very good scammer!!

Hi BuckeyeGirl and welcome to Scamwarners.

Romance scammers are very patient and will often wait a long time to ensure that they have really lured their victim in to the scam before they start asking for money - so doing nothing suspicious for a month is not an indication he is legitimate.

There are instructions on how to up load pictures here and if you could also post some of his emails (particularly the earlier ones) that would help as scammers often use scripted emails. As he is also using a Yahoo email address can you also post the headers of one of his emails - after removing your email address from them (instructions on getting headers are here) as this should show us where he is really writing from.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

I would say your instinct is very likely correct. Just looking at

He is overseas right now.

This is a significant red flag. The vast majority of "soldiers stationed overseas" on dating sites are scammers. Real soldiers do not typically have large amounts of time to chat, and those with families back home typically want to spend much of that time staying in contact with loved ones. Plus, lieutenant colonel is a high rank that carries a lot of responsibility, making the likelihood that he would be able to hang out and chat regularly even lower.

MARITIAL: Widow for 5 years, breast cancer

The number one claim of romance scammers.

Father died when he was 6 years old.

Another typical scammer profile.

So at this point, just based on your initial information, there is a high likelihood that you are dealing with a scammer. But, it's not 100% certain. Often we can also look at scammers' letters and either identify them through their English (most Africans cannot pass as American, and make certain mistakes) or through the use of a copied script.

If you can post a few of the emails he sent you, or some early messages, we can likely tell you with more certainty.

Hi BuckeyeGirl, you were so smart to come here to scamwarners with your suspicions. I will tell you, the moderators here know their stuff and so do those of us who have been scammed. You have the typical- soldier, widowed, usually at least one parent has died. I seem to get all the engineers, especially the constructions ones!
One thing you need to watch is wavering on whether or not this person is a scammer. They are. I got scammed because I had that nagging feeling in the back of my mind but my scammer didn't follow all the traditional signs. And he waited through several crises before he asked me for money. By then, it was easier because he had finally used everything to not ask me for money, so out of compassion I wanted to help.
The way they talk to you, the way they make you feel, how they draw you in to think someone could know you for only a short time and yet say they're falling in love with you- doesn't that feel great? But here's the kicker- it's all built on lies. It is done to draw you in and make you feel important, loved and ultimately, to give them money. It is hard to believe that someone can do that but believe me, look at all the stories in this forum. It happens every day to all kinds of people.
Please make sure you have stopped contact with this person. Please provide the moderators with whatever photos or information you need to confirm this guy is a scammer. It's ok- you trusted yourself, you came here and now, you can stop him from twisting your heart any further than he already has.

THANK YOU ALL!! It is over, he texted me this morning rambling on and I told him to leave me alone. He got mad because he said he was flying in to meet me and I told him that I had to work. He texted about ten times after that rambling on and then threatened to call the FBI, I told him to go ahead. I have pictures of the soldier but I don't know how to upload them. If anyone knows how please let me know so I can get these pictures out there. By the way I met him on Badoo.

I had my suspicions but wanted to make sure. Thank you for this site!!
