I got this scam from Match.com. Sweet james53 starting in late October, 2013. His email address is [email protected]. He is supposedly a construction engineer who travels the world building things. He is currently stranded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with his 19 year old daughter Annabel. His pictures portray a very handsome man with a beautiful daughter. He speaks with a French accent when he calls and said that he grew up in Paris. He moved back to the states in July, 2012 after his parents died three years before. An only child, he has been a widower for six years. He first started asking for money after he lost his wallet in a taxi. His bank account was shut down and he couldn't access funds until he returned because his bank refused to help him. He has asked for return airfare, BTA money, money to help a construction worker with surgery due to a two story fall at the construction site, and hotel bills. He provided me with documentation of receipts from hotel bills and medical bills. He is one of the pretty people scammers. He is very sweet to talk to. He writes lovely emails. He uses the term "I take coffee in the morning." I've never heard that term before, yet it's been included in some of the emails from other Match.com scam postings. I looked him up on Intelius early on but neither he nor his phone number could be traced in Denver. He refused to give me his address over the past two months. He was vague about where he lived in Denver. The hotel in Kuala Lumpur could not be accessed via Internet, yet he always did his work over the Internet. His mantra was that he needed money to get home so he could access his funds and go back to finish the job. He provided no pictures of his location and job site because he said that his camera was broken in his cell phone. After I sent him money, he still needed more for the various reasons stated above. Not surprisingly, he has yet to return and pay me back. It's pretty sad that I fell for this! Stay off of Match.com! Do your homework! If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

Unfortunately, scamming is not limited to match.com. Virtually every dating site is loaded with scammers. African scammers see these sites as nothing more than money-making opportunities, and they open hundreds of fake accounts on dating and social networking sites every day. And you are undoubtedly dealing with an African scammer--the Malaysia location means he is most likely Nigerian, as there is an extensive Nigerian scam operation based in Malaysia.

While you can certainly just give up online dating, for many people that is not really a choice they want to make, so it is important to learn to recognize scammers quickly if you are going to be on dating sites. Don't be afraid to check out their stories. Google their photos, email addresses, and even passages they wrote. Check their phone numbers--redirect numbers are an almost certain sign of scam, while VOIP numbers should be considered a potential red flag.

Hi susano1952, welcome to scamwarners. Your story sounds very familiar to me. I too got scammed by a similar story with a scammer who was on a business trip in Kuala Lumpur. It all sounded so good, all the sweet words, building slowly from friendship to love. Mine lost his wallet in the airport, didn't ask me for help right away and then bam, all of a sudden, everything became about money. And my scammer too was on match.com.
It is so hard to deal with all this when all you wanted was to connect with someone online, maybe find love and a connection. I know I felt so happy for that time to know someone could care about me- I loved getting into chat, every email was full of love and poetry. And when reality hit, and I finally came here to get the truth, I was thankful to be done but sad at the same time.
I hope you take it easy on yourself. Make sure you are not communicating any more, even though the feelings of wanting revenge are strong. I felt so sad, mad, silly, foolish. There are still days when I think and wonder how I could have let that happen, But it did, just because I wanted someone to love me.
If you stay online dating, just watch again for scammers. They are on almost every site and some are easier to sight than others. Just remember you deserve someone real, not a fake out to hurt you.
