Welcome to Scamwarners morcan54.

Don't have any concerns that you were mistaken. He is without any doubt a scammer.

A Major General is very well paid and doesn't need cash from anyone and, in the event of his wife dying, he would be very well cared for by the military and he would be allowed leave to go home to the USA, or the UK if he is a British soldier. He would also have a bank account and wouldn't need to use Western Union, and there is no reason to send money to Africa.

The military wouldn't be interested in a letter from a girl friend. Scammers only do that to pretend that the military want the girlfriend to pay money, but Western armies don't ask relatives to pay them money - ever.

He is a scammer. He is angry because he wants to steal your money and you won't pay him. Scammers like to brag to their friends how clever they are. You have made him feel stupid and a failure. Good work. :D

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

Your instinct was absolutely right. You were dealing with a scammer, not a real soldier.

You will NEVER have to write to anyone for a real solder to get leave, retirement, or anything else. A real soldier makes all requests for himself, and you will not be part of it. Soldiers also NEVER have to pay a fee for leave, retirement, etc. These processes only exist in the imaginations of African scammers.

Quite frankly, high-ranking army officials in Afghanistan are way too busy with their military responsibilities to be hanging out on dating sites and chatting/emailing with strange women.
