Hi everyone!
I need help to figure out if this is a scam. I have an aunt from the Philippines. She has been communicating with someone here in US. This guy (who he was communicating with) says he lives in Chicago. It was not that long that they have known each other but the guy told my aunt that he sent a package in the Philippines through courex. The courier is unfamiliar to me. I told my aunt to track the parcel and she did. The tracking result said that the package is in hold at Malaysia customs because the package contained a big amount of money. My aunt then called the guy from Chicago and told about the situation. The last time my aunt tracked the package, it is no longer available. I told my aunt to email the courier's website and. The Courier asked her to pay $600+ to be able to receive the package and if she doesnt pay the amount,Additional $50 each day will be added. This made me think twice if this is a scam or not. Please help. Thankyou!

It is a scam. What you are describing is textbook African romance scam. The scammer is typically a young African man, posing as an American or British middle-aged man, using photos stolen from the internet. There is a large number of Nigerian romance scammers running these scams out of Malaysia.

The courier website will be a fake, created for the sole purpose of running this exact scam on hundreds of victims. If you post the website here, our fake site killers can check it out and see if they can get sufficient evidence to get it killed.

Here is one of MANY examples of this same format:

What if a payment was given is there a possibility to get the money back?
Did you ever encounter such?

If the payment was made by Western Union or Moneygram and has been collected then I am afraid that there is no way of getting the money back.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

You will never get the money back. If someone contacts you and says that they can get the money back, that is a SCAM as well. They will often lie and pretend to be someone else who can get your money back. This is all part of the scam and they will just steal more and more of your money.
Stop all communication with them right away and ask us for help if you need it
