My mother was approached on facebook by somenone named Dave Williams one week ago.
I guess he's been flirting with her and said that he liked her so much that he wanted to send her a gift worth 12000USD. He claims to be working in APL and even got a translater (my mother is vietnamese) to talk to my mum regarding this package.

Then my mother called me to ask me to help her transfer 3200USD which she had to pay because the package was stopped in customs in Malaysia and apparantly weighted 25 kg (5 kg excess) and so they told her to pay this to get her package to Norway.

Second email she received:

I replied that the sender, who's Dave Williams should cover the expenses himself since he's the one who wanted to send her this gift. Furthermore I told them this didn't look legit and so they responded by sending a receipt.

Welcome to Scamwarners nhutran.

Yes it is definitely a scam being operated by a West African who may be located in West Africa or perhaps even Malaysia.

Diplomats don't deliver parcels around the world for people and diplomatic mail isn't touched by customs. This idea is peculiar to West African scammers.

There isn't any gift and there isn't any package. The scammer just wants to steal money from your mother.

Duty is only payable when it gets to the receiving country when local customs will contact you, but it's all just a silly story from a lowlife thief trying to steal money.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

As Terrance said, it is a scam.

There is no package. There is only an African scammer and a fake shipping company, which is actually the same scammer or an accomplice.

There is a large cell of Nigerian scammers operating in Malaysia, so it is likely that the scammer really is located in Malaysia.

He didn't get a translator. He most likely just used google translate. It is free and easy and used by scammers frequently so that they can target potential victims in more countries.

The writing is obviously West African. Running text through a computer translator produces characteristic errors, and when the text is written with the errors typical of West Africans, the result can be incomprehensible. Could you post the Vietnamese text? I don't know Vietnamese, but maybe someone here does and can analyze it.
