Information on romance scams and scammers.

Hi there guys, I am the owner of www.wheellovedating.co.uk, A free online dating website for the disabled, and able-bodied people if they wish to join. I am well aware that a large majority of people who join up are not genuine. I've even received messages myself which are so obviously from people who are not who they say they are.

However, how on earth stop these people from signing up? After all, the website is free, a lot of people search free dating website, the people who really don't want to fork out money. Unfortunately that does attract the scammers. I am seriously thinking about doing away with the free membership and maybe asking for a £5 one-off membership. Hopefully this would stop the scammers, but not be too much for genuine people who may be looking into dating online, but don't want to spend loads of money.

I would appreciate any comments, or advice you may have. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about these fake registrations. If you can pinpoint any members on my site letter may certainly fake then let me know and I will remove membership permanently. It's a real shame really, because I know there are a few genuine people on the site.

I can't believe that my site is the only one that suffers from this, any free dating website must get bombarded with these scammers.

Thanks.

Unfortunately there isn't much chance of getting rid of them. Lavalife is the site that I've been contacted on time and again, by the same individuals (scammers). I can immediately tell which one is which by how they "write" and their "life story" (script). On Lavalife there are free profiles BUT they can not initiate any contact. These scammers MUST initiate contact with as many potential victims as possible before they are kicked off, so they pay the minimum fee. These scammers don't care about the fee because they make so much money from the victims.

The scammers contact as many as possible and immediately get the person off the dating site to Skype or Yahoo to continue contact. The original profile that they post will change in 1 or 2 days using a different username, different stolen profile pics and new email addresses in an attempt to not get caught as a scammer and kicked off.

If you initiate a fee on your site you will only be hurting the REAL people, not the scammers.

Best of Luck

I agree with everything you said, thanks. And yes, initialising a fee, even a small fee if not what my site is all about. I don't want people to have to pay to join. I just hope that the genuine people can see through the people who are only there to try and scam.
