I received an instant message from John Lawrence towards the end of April 2010. He told me he was very interested in me and wanted to get to know me. Too make a long story short, he emailed me love poems he claims he wrote himself, sent instant messages several times a day professing his love for me.
He told me he was born in Amsterdam, Holland and that his father was a political figure who had many mistresses. He said he had been married for 8 years and had a daughter named Amber who died from diabetes when she was 18 years old. Supposedly his wife ran off to Cuba with her boyfriend when the baby was only 6 months old and his mother helped to raise the child while he worked. He told me that he had worked for Texco for 25 years and that he quite working for them as he wasn't being paid what he was worth. Now he was a private consultant and that he was working on a bid for a contract that if he won it, he could retire.
A red flag went up when he asked me if I owned my own home. I didn't want to give him the answer which seemd to irritate him so I told him that if that was going to upset him that we didn't need to communicate any longer. Then he started to ask me very personal questions as to how I had been hurt in the pass and if I could ever love again. In the end, I admited that I did own my home as it was part of how I got hurt in my divorce.
He was so sympathetic when I told him about how I had been hurt in the past. After I told him all this he said that it made him fall in love with me and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. Another flag that went up was that it seemed to take him a long time answering or responding to my Instant messages and I wondered if he was talking to someone else while he was talking with me.
Within the course of one week he had sent me flowers three times. He said he won the contract and told me he was going to make $1,450,00 for two weeks worth of work, which was in the United Arab Emerites. he even told me to get a realter so he could by us a $600,00 home in NY as he wanted me to be near my family.
A few days later he send me an Instant Mesage saying that he has a problem and wants me to help him out. Turns out he didn't bring enought of his heart medicine and he wanted me to get it for him. He told me that his roommate was on vacation and he had no way of getting it there.
He said I would have to go to Paynesvile MN to get it as this was the only place it could be bought and that it cost $1,350. i checked the address he gave me on the Internet and there was no pharmacy listed. He didn't seem to want to tell me the names of the drugs and he wanted me to go to the bank and get the money that night. I knew instantly that he was a scammer so I didn't do as he asked me.
