Stephen Oakley - Military Scammers

I didnt know that these exsisted until somebody approached me by email and started a friendship. I got a little confused last night when he asked me to email his seargent re a mobile phone for him as he was going down near the front line.

I didnt quite believe what he was sying so I said I would email his sgt however he persisted through our whole time he kept asking me to do this email so I cut the conversation came of msn and sent the email. I thought the email address looked dodgy so I didnt send and started to do some research - Hey Presto havent I got off lucky! I have recieved teddies, chocks, champagne and flowers but they havent recieved anything from me, boy am I glad that I am not trusting.

i am so glad you realised something was wrong and avoided being scammed, well done.

I do need to point out that if those chocolates and flowers were sent by the scammer, they were no doubt paid for with somebody elses credit card, it is quite common for them to do that and of course the person the send the good to becomes the receiver of stolen goods.

While you should not have too many problems it is a good idea to keep any emails you were sent from this scammer as evidence that you did not knowing receive stolen goods.

If you could please post any information you have on the scammer it may help to stop somebody else from being scammed and lastly, if you have any questions please ask

Thanks for posting those emails, it will be a huge help, absolutely no doubt that its a scam, it follows all the common themes for this type of scammer.

I know it's hard to question someone once you have trust in them, but I'm not sure that the scammer has a very logical view of the military in what he's said. Contacting someone else has practically become a pantomime tradition with West African scammers, even when there is no earthly reason to do it.

He's not in the military from his vocabulary, and need I say why having a mobile phone on the front line is a bad idea ?

Britons have mobile phones already, though not the military in war zones for obvious reasons. Only scammers ask for phones because they need them for their scamming.

I know for a fact that it would be an offence for a British soldier to have one in Afghanistan, and to suggest taking one near the front line - is plain ridiculous.

A close friend of mine was approached recently online by Stephen Oakman with exactly the same email address as shown on this string of posts. He is now alleging that he is a businessman based in Hampshire in the UK but abroad on a business trip. He says he has a daughter (still at West London College) who is 19 .Exactly the same pattern as the previous posts,even the same poems!! He then "allegedly" went on his business trip he sent flowers, chocolates, champagne and a teddy bear. Then suddenly he got taken short of money and requested a moneygram to be sent. If it hadnt been for these previous posts she might well have sent it as it sounded so sincere. Thank you so much to the previous person who had the strength to do this - whilst my friend is now feeling rather silly at least she is not out of pocket. I am posting this so that people are aware that he is still operating. Should she be concerned that he knows her address and personal details such as date of birth?

tell your friend she needn't feel silly. How was she to know that this type of scam exists? And these criminals are experts in what they are doing - they have been trained by their gang bosses and have years of experience.

And sending presents made it look even more real. However, the scammer didn't spend any of his own money to buy them; he was probably using the stolen details of another victim's credit card.

As for the information your friend sent, well, it is not perfect that the scammer has got hold of it. However, there is little he can do with it.

Your friend should beware of other attempts to scam her: The scammer thinks she is a good mark and might try to approach her with other types of scam and a fresh identity. If she feels she has received a suspicious email, she should come here for advice.

She shouldn't confront him with what she found out about him. This would give him hints how to improve his scam, and she doesn't want to educate him. She should drop him and refuse his attempts to contact her again.
