More than 60 Dating Scammers Arrested in Russia

The municipal court of Yoshkar Ola, the capital of Mari El Republic, Russia recently passed a sentence on 10 members of a criminal group who tricked lots of men from USA and Canada out of their money. The criminals pretended to be women looking for potential husbands.
Alexei Trushkov, the head of the criminal group, got 4 years in jail and has to pay 10,000 roubles' fine ($323). Other accused were put on probation and fined 5,000 roubles ($161.4).
The criminal group (most of them were students) worked from autumn 2004 till summer 2007. They rented apartments and turned them into offices where corresponded with men round-the-clock, posing as potential brides.
The members of the criminal group were arrested during the operation carried out by Federal Security Service of Russia. Also, employees of the Department of Homeland Security (USA) took part in the investigation of the case along with their Russian colleagues. More than 60 fraudsters were arrested during the operation.
Totally, more than a hundred computers and 10 sets of satellite equipment were confiscated from 14 so-called offices by the police.
412 men, most of them USA citizens, were victimized by the swindlers. Men transferred money, as they thought, to brides. The sums varied from $100 to $4,000. The total damage equals 9,000,000 roubles ($290 609.4).
39 more members of this criminal group are currently on remand. 15 of them will face trial soon.
