Queen of the dating site scammers ‘wrote sob stories about 9/11 and sewing’
A woman fabricated sob stories for female con artists about 9/11 and broken sewing machines, a court has heard.
Patricia Wutaan of Penge, Bromley penned scripts for those looking to make money online, including one from the point of view of a woman who lost her husband in the 9/11 attacks.
The 55-year-old was an expert at emotional manipulation, and successfully extracted £70,000 from a Swiss man using a fake profile on a dating website.
Police also found she’d written hints and tips for scammers in her handbook-style collection of notes, including ‘stay calm and moody until you get his final word’.
There is no evidence Wutaan used any of the scripts herself. After she denied the allegations against her, police proved the notes were hers by analysing her handwriting.
She was found guilty of three counts of money laundering and two counts of possession of articles for use in fraud on Thursday at Southwark Crown Court.
