What's new in the world of scams and ScamWarners.

Just a heads up for UK based folks. These guys (computer maintenance services) seem to be phoning around people telling them that they are contacting them about a previously raised computer virus issue. They claim to be London based but are not (probably India), they refuse to give out phone numbers, contact details or the name of the person who allegedly contacted them about the problem. Needless to say, this is a scam so tell them to get lost, at best they will rip off your card details, at worst they will direct you to a site which hosts a trojan (masquerading as anti virus), infect your machine and nick all your logins, so beware.

Remember: If you didn't enter a lottery, you can't win one.

A recent variant of this involves joining forums and sending out PMs stating that the forum has detected a virus on your PC with a link to an "anti-virus" site that will actually attempt to infect your computer.

Just to expand on Arnold's post (above)

Another example of a similar PM here;

Hi CM and welcome

I am not sure what to make of this right now, fake sites is not my strong point but what I do know it that I dont like having live links to scam sites in a forum like this.

For that reason I have disabled the link and await advice from somebody with more experience in this area
by Michael Tue Jun 15, 2010 6:38 am
Hey there CM,

can you tell me which site it is? The name is thisistheone, but am I looking for .net, .com, .co.uk, ...?

@Ralph: I believe that the link you disabled is the link to the site of the poster.

@CM: There is one little thing that bugs me on your site, which you should alter: There is no contact data on your site. No adress, no telephone number. Only the possibility to mail. Yet on your 'repairs' tab page I see the following:
No Call out Fee (within five mile radius) Free Quote's

I'm not sure I'm understanding this correctly, but how would a customer ever know what that five mile radius is? Perhaps you should mention where that area is located :)

Thank you Michael, in that case I have removed the link completely, I wouldn't like others to suspect that site is fake as I have done ;)

This actually sounds like a variation on the old "office supply vendor" scam, where someone calls offices and pretends to be a regular vendor, duping employes into buying overpriced product.

I've heard of a variation of this in Scotland
They cold call claiming to be Microsoft Helpdesk saying your pc has been sending error messages
