There are regular companies that use these authorities legitimately and some that don't, and there are some companies that push the boundaries.

The most unscrupulous examples I have seen make you an offer that is ridiculous, such as buying a shopping voucher valued at £10 for £1, or something similar. Usually the offer is so tempting, there must be something behind it, and there is. The company really just wants your card details to establish a continuing payment in respect of a membership or subscription, and the warning that this is what's happening will not be well signposted to you.

Though, under UK law you have some protection, these companies are usually based in remote jurisdictions and rely on fighting any reclaim attempts tooth and nail. It's better to avoid the offers rather than get involved in the hassle you'll have. A simple Google search will usually tell you all you want to know.
