This scam is usually performed by scammers in the Far East or Eastern Europe but, in this case, a UK scammer tried it and got busted. They dupe Ebay sellers into posting items for them on their page who pass on the payments for which they receive a commission. The drawback is that the scammer usually never sends anything out or what they send out is worthless and the dupe Ebay seller takes the hit and gets their Ebay page taken down.

eBay fraudster: Bristol accountant sold gift vouchers that did not exist

This example is slightly unusual in that the Ebay seller and the fraudster knew each other. The victims are the buyers and the people operating the Ebay page. When the Ebay seller sells items for someone they don't know, they end up taking the losses and the chances of tracing the fraudster are zero.

There have been reports of emails circulating to genuine eBay sellers that are from scammers trying to get items posted that they have not purchased.
