I suspect that this is a massive underestimation. I usually spot and list 100 plus fraudulent adverts daily on just one major UK car ad site and other sites have an even worse problem.
The only time I would ever use an ad site is to check what cars a local main dealer has in stock, and even then I wouldn't buy a vehicle without viewing and inspecting it first.

Online fraud is big business, costing UK car buyers £17.8 million a year, according to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB). Last year the average loss for the 6,600 people who reported being ripped off in online car transactions was £4,078 per victim. The majority of cases involve people buying cars that don’t exist, aren’t delivered after deposits have been left or are worthless for various reasons.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
