The uncanny thing is that I came across exactly the same fraud in my banking days before I ever got involved in dealing with scams, and I never thought I'd come across another example.

In fact it's a type of scam we term an 'overpayment scam' using a forged or counterfeit cheque where the scammers asks for the amount overpaid to be returned to him before the cheque is exposed as a dud. Farmers are very often seen to be easy targets and perhaps not as aware of scams as other businessmen.

The Serious Fraud Office and the City of London police’s cheque fraud unit were notified after breeders across the UK reported the unusual behaviour of a buyer operating from an address in Liverpool. The fake buyer puts in an order then aims to extract thousands of pounds from the breeder before the cheque has cleared.

The British Charolais Cattle Society confirmed that several of its members had been targeted.

The scam can be performed on anyone whether you're selling a vintage car or some beads on eBay.
