Detectives from the Kingston Police Fraud Unit are seeing scam involving the posting of ads on-line, on sites such as Kijiji, for “work at home” jobs. People responding to the ad think they are getting jobs as “package handlers” - packing parcels for delivery companies, business people, etc. They get sent merchandise that is shipped from retailers. They are then sent shipping labels and are instructed to forward the merchandise to other countries such as Russia and Nigeria.

It inevitably transpires that the merchandise (computers, iPods, etc.) were ordered online by the culprits with stolen credit card data. The people in Canada who are sent the merchandise for re-packaging are being used to launder the proceeds of crime. The culprits will go to some lengths in appearing legitimate, including creating professional looking websites to make it appear that they are a real shipping company.

There is no legitimate reason for people or shipping companies to re-package and re-ship merchandise in this manner. The public is urged to exercise common sense and to be very careful when it comes to any type of online job posting that has to do with the receiving and sending of goods or money.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.
