Hi!

Lots of people trying to sell items receive SMS texts or emails where a person claims to be "very interested" in buying the item. I did too, and soon realized it was a scam attempt. I didn't first realize how the scam was supposed to be carried out, since the scammer wanted my Paypal account in order to send me money. Later I realized that the scammer sent his own emails looking like Paypal emails that claimed to be confirmation emails stating that the money for the item PLUS an extra ~500 Euro had been sent to me. The extra money was allegedly for shipping. I was then supposed to send the excess 500 Euro via Western Union to someone in the UK that was supposed to handle the shipping. Obviously, no money had ever actually been sent to my Paypal account; the confirmation emails were fake. In order to war you for this kind of scam I have decided to publish all email conversations here. My email account is a temporary one, for that sale only, so there's no point in emailing that address...

First SMS from scammer:

Sender: jennifer.de
Time: 2011-06-24 00:01
SMS text: Hello,Is your bike on blocket.se still available for sale?If yes, please reply to me ([email protected])

Hi Friend,

i have just receive an alert from PayPal Customer Care with the confirmation email that the payment has been made,a total of 10,500 SEK was sent,5,500 SEK for the shopper and the extra 4,500 SEK for the shipping charges and 500 SEK for western union charges and am sure you notice that, which you will be sending 4,500 SEK to the address below via western union.

Name : Terry David
Address : 41 Station Road,Solihull.
City : Birmingham
Postal Code : B91 3RT
Country : United Kingdom.

The shipper would be coming around to your area to have the shopper picked up once you have sent the shipping charges fee to them,as i need you to send me your home address for the pickup and let me know what time you want them to come for the pick up.

I will be waiting to hear from you once the money has been sent to the shipper.

Thanks.

Hi!

I have a PayPal account ([email protected]), so as soon as I have received your payment, I'll delete the ad. Do I need to prepare the Shopper for the shipment (draining gasoline for instance)? Just let me know if that is the case.

/Fredrik

The last picture shows the new H4 headlight. You can also see a few scratches... If you want to use it in England, you may want to switch to the old symmetrical headlight since the one mounted is an asymmetrical for right-side driving. I'll see to it that it comes with the Shopper.

If possible can you send me some recent picture?,My shipper will be coming for the pickup, after you have received payment, which would be through PayPal,So do you have a PayPal account for the payment?.

The Shopper is in good mechanical condition, but the finish of the paint may not be top notch. It is after all some 30 years old. The engine and transaxle runs very well, and I have re-wired some of the electrical system and replaced a faulty relay, so that part should be in really good condition. I have even replaced the headlight with a car-type headlight with a H4 bulb (without altering the appearence) which feels much safer at night.

I have been waiting to read from you regarding the MTCN number that will be
given to you at the western union money transfer after you might have send

Please let me know if you have send the money via western union and if
you've not done it make sure it is done today.I will be waiting to read from
you regarding the information that will be given to you at the western union
and also your address for the pick up and i will be very glad for this.

Please make sure you get back to me ASAP.

Nice doing business with you.

Hi fb, thank you for posting this warning, it will help others to avoid this scam.

You seem to have posted your own email address; unfortunately this is not a good idea as it can be harvested off the internet by other scammers and spammers. I don't know if you will be around soon to edit it out, so I've asked the moderators to delete it.
by fb35523 Fri Jul 08, 2011 8:05 am
Hi!

Thank you for your concern, but the email address is a one-time-only address created for the purpose to sell the item, so it will be deleted shortly. No need to edit anything!

I had a 67 Mustang listed on Craigslist.
I got an email which was too good to be true...but i was desperate and went ahead and gave up my PAYPAL account which he said THATS the ONLY way he can pay since hes on a ship in the middle of the ocean! That a shipping company will come pick up! I told him "ok, BUT(of course i was smarter then him) i said that he would send to my paypal, once i am able to withdraw funds into my hand from my bank then i would release the car! He emails me saying SURRRRRRRE thats sounds great...i will send you an extra $400 to take the car off listing! Then i send my paypal info to him...NEXT DAY i have to emails sitting in my in box...one is an email saying that i have recieved funds to my "paypal" account....i look at the sender of the email and it says "PAYPAal", so i go to my paypal account and it says ZERO transactions for today! I look at the second email, also from "PAYPAal" it says that there was an issue with his(buyer: ALEX SAMPLE....yeah "SAMPLE" how stupid am i?) exporter and that he sent me an extra $900dls= $800 for the car exporter and $100 for Western union fees! Then he(Buyer) sends me an email saying that i have to send the funds to the exporter and then they(WU) will notify paypal to release my funds...the funds will not register UNTIL THEN!!! OK...now i start to smell bullshit! So i call him on it, first he says he wants to complete the transaction and the fee is legit....so i send a further email calling him out, calling him a coward, that ill be in london soon...try that shit face to face....blah blah.......NOW HE GOES SILENT......so now i go to work....im going to plaster all this info and addresses everywhere i can!!!! WE ALL HAVE TO stick out for the decent people!!!! I WORK FOR MY MONEY...i feed my kids with that money...and for some one to steal it for being a lesser man.....HELL NO!!!!!

all the assholes info:
email he used: [email protected]

address he wanted the funds to go to:

Name : Thomas Philip
Address : 41 Station Road, Solihull
City : Birmingham
Postal Code : B91 3RT
Country : United Kingdom.

Fake paypal email came from: [email protected]

If this even stops one person from dealing with this scum...then im happy...people like this need to be delt with!!!!!

Hi!

I want to thank you for this warning. I was worried and googled the name and adress I should pay by Western Union for transport to the byer of my boat. This was the first link I got. The different was only the name, in my cause Terry David, but the adress was simular. Now then I also have talking to PayPal, they confirm that I got fake mail supposing to be from them. But this website was my first evidence that my suspicions was right, so THANK YOU!

Hi all!

Glad to see that people are warned by my original post and all the other replies. Today, there was an article in our local newspaper describing this "New Internet Scam", as they called it! When I was targeted, I called the police, but since this was a mild international crime no resources could be allocated to pursue it. There should really be an international police force pursuing these kinds of scams. Lots of people fall for it (I guess, any statistics out there?) but since crimes are low-prio and involves another country and thus are international, it becomes too resource-demanding for the police to pursue every single case.

Link to the Swedish article:

http://hallandsposten.se/nyheter/halmst ... tbedrageri

Google translator is not perfect for swedish to english translations (BIG understatement), so here is my fast-fixed Google translation:

Car owners revealed new internet fraud
Oskarström [note: this is the village where the seller lives]

"Pay Otherwise, we will contact the FBI." Despite the threat a car owner from Oskarström did not fall for the scam that began with an ad on the ad-site blocket.se.

Oskarströmsbon was selling his car. A speculator who got in touch with him via e-mail became interested and later claimed to have paid the agreed amount by using the payment service PayPal.

In addition to the purchase price would also include the 7000 crowns (SEK, ~1000 USD) representing the buyer's costs of transporting the car home.

- I got a requirement for me to pay that amount to Western Union for the car to be retrieved. There was little time to pay up, the Oskarströmsbo explains.

But he sensed danger and contacted PayPal who, after a quick check could reveal that the alleged buyer had not paid any money at all. Threats and demands that the transfer would be made promptly appears to have been planned to avoid the seller would have time to check it.

All contacts with the buyers were made via e-mail. The buyer wrote to Oskarströmsbon in English.

[End of article]

Please post any scams looking like this one if you get subjected to one. The more up-to-date info there is here, the more likely it is that the next person getting scamed sees it.

Thank you for posting this news story Fredrik. Yes, your original post has helped many people. That is what ScamWarners is here to do.

It is frustrating that law enforcement cannot do much, but that is also understandable.

Hi!

I just had another incident like the previous one. I received a text message (SMS) from a "jason.barke" who "wanted to buy my bike""...

Here is the message (sender was not a mobile phone number, but "jason.barke"):

--
Hello I Just view your(Bike)Listed on blocket.se,Am interested buying it from you. Please contact me direct to my email: [email protected]
--

Any oddities like missing spaces, incorrect capital letters and so on are as they were in the original message.

This email address ([email protected]) has been used quite some time for scam attempts. I'll update this thread once I get a reply from the scammer.

Here is my reply to the scammer:

--
Hi!

You sent me a text message where you stated that you were interested in buying my motorcycle, a BMW K100RS. It is still up for sale, so if you wish, you may come and see it this week.

/Fredrik
--

My idea is that if everyone replies to the scammers, knowing it is a scam attempt, their time is consumed by scam attempts that lead nowhere. I'll keep them on the line for as long as I can just to occupy their time.

Hi!

I also had an email response from a scammer. The email address is [email protected] and the name was entered as "harry". The email was sent through the ad site, so the swedish text in the message is from them (warnings regarding scams and other info...)

--
I am interested.Kindly let me know if the motorcycle is still available
for sales.

Welcome to Scamwarners lennero and it's good to hear that you didn't get scammed, but please be careful as there are a lot of scammers targeting 'ad sites', especially car sellers and buyers.

If you're selling a left hand drive car located in Austria then his address in the UK should have alerted you. Unless you're selling a very special car it just wouldn't be worthwhile or sensible to buy a car from Austria, because it's left-hand drive and the cost of re-registration, insurance and transport would be prohibitive. He probably gave a UK address as he probably knows he can't pretend to be a German speaker.

Scammers are always looking for new places to try out their scams, where people don't know what to look out for - be cautious.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
