Yeah it's now Evelyn Hudson. Selling a motor home on eBay for 3450. I have been duped. Like so many I paid these fu**ers on bacs today. No suspicions until Barclays rang me to say it had been flagged as fraud. The account name we paid (stupidly) is marco russ. Barclays account in Leicester. Pretty sure narco russ the German footballer doesn't need my 3&1/2 grand but hey ho.

We are with Barclays and they rang me to alert me. I'm hoping to get my money back as I think they stopped it in time.

This was an eBay classified add. I thought I was covered by the very clever and authentic looking emails from eBay, but of course they weren't from eBay at all.

Complete the transaction in 5 easy steps:

Buyer and Seller agree on the transaction terms and a selling price. Seller contacts eBay Customer Support with the transaction details;
eBay Customer Support accepts the transaction and offers purchase protection to the Buyer (if the transaction is declined, no further action is required from neither Buyer or Seller);
The Buyer receives an invoice and sends the payment to eBay Customer Support. After the payment is verified by eBay Customer Support, the Seller will initiate the shipping.
The Buyer receives the vehicle and has five (5) business days to inspect it. If it is as described and as agreed, the Buyer should accept the vehicle. If he refuses it, the Buyer must ship the vehicle back to the Seller expense;
After the inspection period is over (5 business days), the Buyer must contact eBay Customer Support with the result of the inspection. If the Buyer accepts the vehicle, the payment will be sent to the Seller within three (3) business days.

Wecome to Scamwarners Stopthesebast**ds.

You're pretty lucky if your payment has been saved and it'll be nice to congratulate Barclays for a change if they've managed the double of notifying you it's a fraud and preventing the 'money mule' getting your payment. It gives hope that their fraud detection systems are on high alert, however it remains a concern that it's almost inevitable that money mules operate through Barclays.

This scammer's earned a fortune from this fraud and has it down to a fine art. The account isn't in Leicester as that's where all their payments clear through. It'll usually be a branch in a fairly narrow group in London. It's also quite possible that the real name of the receiver has been obscured. The only reliable details are the sorting code and account number.

He'll be really annoyed if this payment doesn't get through to him. If payment is stopped I'd still be inclined to pretend you made the payment and it got through. That'll ensure that the scammer doesn't use the mule again and it'll make him mistrust using 'money mules' if he thinks they'll swindle him. Scammers get very upset with dishonest behaviour from others. It's their strong sense of morality.

Of course, you should never ever buy a vehicle without viewing it first under any circumstances, mainly to prove it exists.

It's quite rare that a money mule will be prosecuted in the UK. It has happened, and I have seen reports of them receiving prison sentences of up to 6 months. The problem is that under the Proceeds of Crime Act in the UK it has to be evidenced that they knew what they were doing, or might reasonably be expected to have known. The easier option is to shut their account, which effectively blacklists them. That might seem the soft option, but it requires no legal action or burden of proof and it makes life incredibly difficult for the person involved. Employment, receiving benefits, paying bills becomes very difficult, if not impossible, but anyone acting as a 'money mule' has broken every banking rule in the book and breeched the bank's security. The account is actually owned by the bank. The customer only owns the money in it.

I use the analogy that if you take a car out and run someone over through ignorance, you wouldn't expect to be allowed to do the same thing again without some penalty, and banks have no obligation to provide anyone with a bank account and they aren't obliged to say why they refuse one, or take one away.

Hello,
The mercedes vito is still for sale. Immaculate condition, no damages, nothing to worry about. 129k miles. All necessary documents available. My current location is Scotland due to my work commitments. If this is going to be a quick sale, I will let it go for £4,490 delivered at my costs.
The deal will go strictly according to eBay Buyer Protection rules and policy.
Thank you

Due to my location and since view or pick up is not an option I have requested personal support and I was approved to use Buyer Protection Program. Here is how the process works:

- you give me your full name and shipping address
- I start the transaction with the eBay,
- they send further payment instructions,
- you have to pay for the item to eBay to secure the funds,
- they confirm me that they received the funds,
- I deliver the van,
- you receive the van,
- they send me the money.

Everything is covered by eBay. I will get paid only after you confirm that you received the van in good order.
Let me know if this is acceptable. Thank you

Evelyn

I'm tracking one gang of camper van scammers and it may be the same group as I haven't been going for the Ebay items. It's a slightly different story and different e-mail addies but it looks like the same general tactic. They have been very successful and have snared a lot of victims.

There are so many scammers on ad sites that if you don't insist on seeing the vehicle, the likelihood is that you'll never see it, or your money. I'm picking up just scam camper van sales on a daily basis, but others sell cars, classic cars. tractors and construction equipment and, if you think paying in to a bank account gives you any protection - it doesn't.

This is the season for camper vans and the usual price is £3,000 - £5,000, and it'll be a tempting bargain.

Have just been taken in by this scam..... bought an Audi Q7 for £7000 supposedly from an ebay seller.... how wrong could I be, reported to police fraud squad and passport control as the scammers asked for a copy of my husbands passport in order to verify a refund!!! all I thought, from ebay. The car was originally advertised on ebay motors but quickly removed, these scammers have many London based Barclays accounts from which they operate.Passport control are investigating this now so let us all hope this will be their downfall, I am totally shattered by this.... so upset.

Welcome to Scamwarners Nicolehenderson.

The extraordinary thing is that, considering the scale of the problem, there is virtually no mention of it in the media. Previous examples have demonstrated that when similar problems have been brushed under the carpet, it only leads to a scandal and a greater crisis later.

I won't repeat myself but there are clear failures in implementation of current regulations leading to this phenomenon and the scale of it is mind boggling. Undoubtedly it affects the UK more than any other country, indeed the UK is being used as a 'key' for scammers to access victims in other countries. To suggest that this is merely a phenomenon of the internet age is simply untrue. It's a symptom of lax and sloppy implementation of existing legislation that is there to protect consumers.
