ebay/paypal scam glad i looked here

Thats the new email I receive. They are try to scare me or something ??

They try to sometimes. And even pose as the FBI and threaten you with arrest.

OK [email protected] just tried to rip off my wife as well. See email below. Another scam we got hit with was someone hacks your account and puts money in, then takes a larger sum out. I'm not sure exactly how this works, but when we contacted PayPal they seemed to be aware of this and refunded us straight away. So if you find money in your account that you weren't expecting. Instead of thinking it's your lucky day. Change your password quickly and you might get one over on the scammer. I think my wife replied to a dodgy email posing as paypal. She logged in and realised it was a scam when they asked for card details. Unfortunately she didn't realise, by logging in they had already stolen her details. The trick is to check the address bar to make sure you haven't been redirected. Presumably it should say something like paypal.com.

Dodgy email. Notice how hard he tries to explain why we have to use paypal. It seems he has gone a bit OTT explaining himself, when I didn't even ask.

As for his job: A "hagiographer's" job is writing biographies of the lives of saints. I think he actually meant "oceanographer" which is the scammers' favourite excuse why they are abroad.

I was selling my surfboard on gumtree for €200. Brandy Dora contacted me pretty quickly to say they would pay €300 to include for Post and Packaging to Nigeria. I hadn't heard that surfing was big in nigeria so I decided to google the name. So thankful for this forum otherwise I would have been scammed.
Brandy then reported my ad to gumtree saying I was the fraud. Ah well if that's the worst they managed to get away with then I'm not worried.

I think this is the same guy i have been dealing with today...i advertised my car on Gumtree.ie yesterday for 900Euro and he e-mails me today saying he will pay me a grand and that i dont need to worry about the shipping to London as he will send somebody to collect it. So glad i googled his name and address. He is using the name mark taiwo but is sending emails from a name of Alicia Rowland - who just happens to be the voice of the talking clock I think!! I entered the address Torbay Street into GooglestreetView and it would appear this street is occupied by small backstreet car garages. I would imagine that '2A' torbay Street simply does not exist. If it does exist could the police not raid the premises? I have Copied and pasted his e-mail to me below and I now need to find out who I can report him to...

He first made contact with me via text message, included in the text message was an email address from which he said he would prefer to communicate. I googled the phone number and it is from New York - queens, bronx area.

I almost fell for it, but something just didn't feel right.
He posted a quick reply to my ad on gumtree.com.au.

This stank of a scam as soon as I got this text message about my Gumtree ad:

I don't think I will. It was from the following strange number, (exactly as shown on my iPhone) +1 (347) 354-5550. Or 13473545550 to help other searchers.

I couldn't find any details on where the number was located or any other references but still really don't like the feel of this one.

The email address led me to Scamwarners, maybe the phone number will help someone else. Thanks all, and keep up the good work.

The scammer would spoof up an email from PayPal which said the money has been placed into your account and you need to ship the item. It would not be an email from the PayPal system. Some times the scammer will cancel the order asd ask you to send a refund, even though you never received the money.

It is important to listen to your "gut" or instincts and if it feels wrong, don't go through with it. Scammers always put the transaction into rush mode. It is positive to slow a transaction down and make sure the process is correct.

If in doubt with PayPal, contact them directly, not through any emails you receive which claim to be from PayPal.
