I just listed a Gumtree ad last night for a car and was receiving texts at 2am, 4am and onwards from people that only wanted an email response with the asking price (which can be clearly seen on Gumtree). One gentleman emailed that he would payer higher than we were asking and needed it freighted see below:

From Alan Cook who's email is [email protected]

Thanks for your swift responds, i will like to take it for $19,000 including PayPal surcharges since i am interested in the immediate purchase, I just moved to the Malaysia where this is needed and i will be making use of a shipping company to have this picked up from you and have it delivered to me after i made the payment and it is clear,Further arrangements will be made with you in regards to the pick up once i have paid you,

I would appreciate if you have some more pictures to email me if available too since i won't be be able to see this in person as i am on sea right now, i will like you to get back to me with your PayPal email to send funds to in order for me to pay in ASAP, i will be looking forward to see a sweet reply from you, stay bless

I hope to read from you soon.

Cheers
Alan

I have received a number of the same text only requests and you can tell from the telephone numbers they are overseas. I mentioned to a couple that I will only talk over the phone due to scammers and haven't heard back from them. It pays to google their email address and you will find they have done this many times before. Yes they really do need a life!!

Ok just wanted to make sure nothing is been left out.
I will be purchasing this for $7000. Payment will be sent using PayPal and i will handle the PayPal surcharge as well. I will arrange with someone to have this picked up for your location once i have paid as i am out of town at the moment. In the meantime, can you send me more pictures (if available)?
Regards,

Williams.

Welcome to ScamWarners bready, yes, just tell them the items are gone or ignore them. Once you know it is a scammer, it is perfectly okay to just ignore them. Thank you for posting this information up.

Hi, I'm also new to Gumtree and the scams involved. I placed an add today, and recieved a text msg not long after, I'd say within the hour. It was from our mate williams woods, it read "I want to purchase your item please get back to me via email". Firstly I found it odd that it was a response via text msg, and he didn't specify which item. So I googled williams woods, thinking it was a furniture reseller... his email is "williams.woods at yahoo dot com.au", as he put it in the text msg. And it turns out that the first link is this one, a warning on scammers. Glad I googled it as I was just about to respond. Think I'll leave it unanwered. Thanks for the great job you guys are doing here, keep up the good work. Very much appreciated.

Hi, It's me again.. I entered the above post last night regarding Williams Woods. I forgot to mention that the text msg (which I didn't respond to after coming across this site) was from a strange number (19035089060), which also ended the text msg with "sent using F.S.C"... very suss. But then at 7am this morning, I recieved another text msg. It was from another strange number, it actually wasn't a number, it read "couty" instead of an actual mobile number.. I thought, here we go, williams is at it nice and early. The txt msg read "Hi, kindly reply me at my email at [email protected] if your ads is still available for sale?". I'm guessing it's the same scammer using a different identity, so again I didn't reply. And then, to top off the morning, at 8.53am I recieved another text msg, again from a strange looking number. This time instead of a mobile number it had the name "Martin". It read "I tried to reach u but didnt get thru just want to know if u still hv d listed AD on Gumtree for sale? kindly contact me on Lowemartin82 at yahoo.com", word for word... these people must think we're stupid. Not about to reply anytime soon. Thanks again for this site. Bunch of champs. Have a good one.

Someone has also tried to scam me over Gumtree for an add i had up for 3 bikes with the email [email protected] I had already contacted Paypal over this and they confirmed it was a scammer and stated that in no way does Paypal associate with money transfer services and does not put a hold on funds. I emailed the guy back and told him paypal had been notified of his fraud attempts and that his so called shipping company did not exist and i will be forwarding all emails onto the police. I am yet to even get a reply from this low life lol

hello,
this scam is still around, in different shapes.
compare here: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php ... ost4380778

i just want to point out:

- it had nothing to do with ebay in my case.

the amount of money was rather small, but he kept on harping about paypal and asking me to open an account there so he can pay me.

i guess it's not a bot, but someone using prefabricated answers to my mails.
i'm having fun keeping him/her busy for a while (and his/her hopes up that i might be stupid enough to fall for this ;-)

nothing about nigeria - NORWAY this time.

the guy came as mr. trygve christian meling ([email protected]) and he even sent a copy of his passport!

i googled the "asped express shipping company" - it doesn't exist but brought me to this forum thread instead.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the guy already had my mobile phone number and e-mail-adress and is now desperately trying to get more personal information out of me, like paypal details and home address
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ps: sorry for the real trygve meling.

Welcome to ScamWarners ohnonot. It is great you recognized you were dealing with a scammer. We strongly recommend you stop communicating with them once you know you are dealing with a scammer. They do have personal information about you and some have harassed people who do not do wha they want. Even getting their email accounts closed down. Some times calling them at work.

If you want to learn to safely mess with scammers become a member of our sister site: www.419eater.com

Yes, scammers do spoof PayPal emails to trick people into sending money.

Hi Everyone.

Looks like Solex Jay ([email protected]) is still at it.

Placed an ad on Gumtree for a property in Thailand. Then received the text message with no reply number.

I sent off an email as requested and got this reply.:

> Hello,
> Thanks for getting back to me, i am willing to buy this but i am at
> sea at the moment as i am a Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)
> employee in Spain but i will retire next month and I want to settle
> down over there with my aged mother, but due to the nature of my work,
> phone calls and internet usage are restricted. I only use a gadget to
> read and reply my emails. i am ready to buy it asap so tell me the
> actual price and send me more pictures of both the interior and
> exterior of the house so I can make my judgement on it after which I
> will contact my estate agent to come and view it.
>
> Regard
> solex

I stupidly sent off more images and more information on the property and then received this email:

Hello,
Thanks for your prompt action and understanding I am satisfied with the cost and the picture of the house also. However,i have contacted my agent but he said he is currently attending meetings in Doha so I want to proceed with this myself as he had advised. In the meantime, I want you to take the property off market because I am definitely going to buy it from you. therefore, I intend to pay you $40,000 EARNEST MONEY out of the cost so you can understand that I am serious about it and you can take it off market now. My agent will come for the documentation and I will pay you balance asap.all i just need from you now is your confirm paypal email address for me to transfer the $40,000 EARNEST MONEY into your paypal account asap and if you dont have a paypal account you can set one up at http://www.paypal.com.au for just 10minutes.

Looking forward to read back from you soon
Regard
Thanks

I thought this was too good to be true and did a search for the name and landed here.

Thanks guys,
