Hi Tais

Yes I'm afraid this is yet another scam letter. The IP header shows that it comes from Lagos Nigeria.

Also the E-Mail address to which they want you to reply:[email protected] is a domain from Mail.com (a provider well liked by scammers.)

Here is a handy link you may like to use: http://www.findaupair.com/forum/display ... 1&get=last

You will find that [email protected] is well known

Hi!
I joined some roommate finder website , and received an email from Mrs Cole. She send me pictures of 1BR apartment , which was located in amazing location, and just for 500$ per month. Which is very cheap depending on where it is located. (upper east side, two blocks from Central park). She wrote me that she don't rent it out because of the money, her daughter was living there before she moved to Europe. So I agreed to what she said and asked if she could wait until I get there next week. we could meet, make payments etc.. but she said she could not wait that long, she thought I was in the city. So if I want to make reservations I should sing the lease form and make payment. She also said that she is a a matron to the roman catholic church. I thought it is too good to be truth, but still I kept writing to her. She sent me Lease form, which by the way looks suspicious( I have worked at laws office and seen different kind of forms, but none of rent lease form can be singed by tenant only) . and said that I should make first month payment and security deposit, total 1100$ via Western Union. And sing , scan and send the lease form to her. I got the email from her yesterday, but now I know it is a fraud. So I still kept playing the game and told her to give me her telephone number and passport copy because I cannot trust someone in internet, being a christian myself. So if she can believe in my word, she could save ap for one week. She said that is not possible.
I read previous emails and wanted to try to verify information she gave me, but no luck for now. I don't know anyone in NYC who could meet her, because I think she knew I was from Europe, I mentioned it in my first email, and she knew that the meeting she wanted to arrange would never happen. But when I checked IP addresses I found that she is from CA, Irvine? I'm not sure did I checked the right info, so, could you check it for me once more.
Here the info -

Maybe you can help me, maybe I'm just too paranoid, but I really can't trust people without knowing them.
Maybe if you are in NYC, and you have spare time to verify info yourself I can give you her telephone number and you can meet her.

forgot to mention that she did gave me her telephone but not the passport copy as I asked. Also the ap ownership certificate .
I put this information in to warn people not for personal reasons. Before I googled her and found nothing. only that many frauds use yahoo.com( sorry users) and that other frauds have been caused by some "Cole" just like this one. So I hope you will find this info useful and will be aware of the danger before it actually happens to you.
I thought maybe I could sing the lease forms and send the money, but only if she could show her ID not by the security question. But I dunno if I would get the money back if she could not show ID..

Hi Caroline and Katrina

Welcome to Scamwarners

Well done on spotting this as a scam before losing any money, many people are not as fortunate as you are.

Please stop all communication, ignore any emails and do not respond to anything further.

Eventually they will go away, while they have any of your real information it is not safe to continue to write to them.

Your IP checking skills have not failed you, I get the same location however it would be a safe bet to presume the person is actually in Africa and using a proxy to hide their true location.

Could you please post any information you have on this which will help us to further investigate.

If you have any more questions, please dont hesitate to ask

funny, cause now I understand why so many people have not answered me. I guess text as- hi, i'm from europe. coming to the states by the end of Sep. does sound a little scam. but it is actually true :D that's how i decided to stay to look for a place when i am actually coming there.

I am going through what you have sent and dont yet have anything useful.

What I do know is that this scammer is smarter than most, he hides his IP, his scripts dont come up in searches
he seems to have only 1 add at a time, you cant view the other add that came up in that search but it appears to be the same appartment being advertised.

One of the emails has quite a few clues however

Hello,

I got your email.

I have told you in my previous email that this apartment is located in a
nice and conducive neighborhood.I assure you that you will not regret
renting this apartment.I have been in this business for over 20 years now
and this is not the first time am renting an apartment out to foreigner.I
am a matron to the roman catholic church.i can't give you apartment you
won't appreciate.

On the other hand, since you can not sign the lease and make payment to
secure the apartment now before you arrival ,am sorry i have to secure the
apartment for some one else.I am only writing you back because you are the
first person to contact me on my list .

Get back to me if you still want to proceed with the reservation.

Best Wishes

Mrs.Kareen

Very subtle and you will need to know what to look for, but you can see this was written by an African.

Lack of spaces after punctation is one such problem but there are others that I will not post to prevent the scammer from being educated but take a look for other wording that doesn't quite make sense.

The scammer says he (yes, it will be a "He") is a matron and religious to promote his honesty, many people believe that people would not use religion in order to steal but scammers prove that theory is wrong every day.

The rush is to give you less time to find it is a scam.

The western union payment to allow them to receive the money anonymously

I will keep looking
