Could you post the suspicious email that you received? If you can include the header information too, that would be wonderful. If you are not sure how to access headers, just state which email programme you are using (eg Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook etc), and somebody will be able to help.

1. Right-click on the mail you would like the header information for.

2. Select 'Properties'.

3. Click on the tab 'Details'. This will give you the headers.

4. Highlight it all with your cursor, right click, and select 'Copy'.

Before posting, however, please go through it carefully and remove your name and email address - they may appear in several places.

That flat appears to be currently occupied by a Doctor with a Middle Eastern name, not the person named in the advert.

It looks to me as if the scammer has messed up on his understanding of how the building and flats are numbered.

What's an American kitchen ?

The use of the word 'attic' makes me think that the person really doesn't understand the building. It doesn't have an attic, and if it did have one, it wouldn't be called an attic as it's a box shaped building, and the parquet floor is something you might not find in a 1st floor flat. It looks as if a scammer has found a property description and is tinkering with it each time he re-advertises it.

I almost got scammed by the wonderful Banuphrasad Pratik today. He had an ad in the ETH Zürich Marktplatz, offering an 80m2 apartment for 770 CHF. I've already notified the website to take the ad off their servers.

I first got thrown by the poor English. Then I googled his name and this site cam up. Thanks! Also note the +4470 number.

Email attached. The first hop is apparently located in Cairo. He also provides a Skype ID (house.rent, allegedly located in the UK) but I don't doubt that it's fake.

The major problem even a smart person will have is that the scammer will hold back on divulging the real tell tale signs it's a scam until the last moment and he'll ensure you've invested so much time and effort in his bogus offer that you are just desperate to get everything sorted out and finalised.

That's a big mistake as you risk losing all your money.

In this case you noticed the 4470 UK number which is a 'redirect' and the first major clue it's a scam. It's not worth even thinking of going any further when that type of UK phone number is quoted, not that scammers don't have phones located in Europe that they can use, but they're in the minority.

The style of the mail is very much like that of a West African scammer and he includes information that is standard in other types of 419 scam. I won't detail what that is as scammers don't need my help to improve their mails.

Scammers know that Western Union is a big red flag to many people and that's why they'll leave mentioning it until the end, or some even come up with a scheme for you to pay yourself money by WU to prove you have funds, but this is just an alternative method for them to steal your money. If they haven't got a bank account then they haven't got an apartment either, and if they don't trust you enough to give you details then you shouldn't trust them enough to send a stranger cash by Western Union.

The earliest sign is the phone number, so make sure you get one, not a skype number - a mobile or landline, and give him a call if it's not a 4470 number. The 4470 ones can be ignored without exception. Many scammers are just copying scripts for their e-mails and can't pull off a convincing impersonation to fit in with their character. Getting a phone number and making a call is the quickest way to be able to junk the majority of scams quickly. It won't catch them all, but it'll save you wasting a lot of time.

I'm sorry that you were scammed by this criminal, and lost all that money. You are not stupid, you just didn't expect this to happen. You never seen or heard anything about those sammers, so how could you have known? These scammers are sophisticated, and know exactly how to take advantage of their victims. Yes, your money is gone, but that's just money. The fact that he has hurt you is far worse, you have to deal with that. Talking about this helps, getting it off your chest. I'm glad you could post this here, with some names and telephone numbers, it will sure help in warning others.
Could you also post some of his emails here? Perhaps he has send you photo's too, you can post them here also.

Since i am presently in Greece,Without wasting much time,I will be sending you the contract documents via email for you to read it and sign it.I am willing to come over to view you the inside of my apartment physically before taking your final decision on either to proceed with the rent or not.But due to my bad experiences in the past by coming over to meet tenants without confirming their seriousness,i found out that most of the tenants are time wasters.Please i will urge you to read my terms and conditions below carefully before we proceed with the contract.

1.Are you satisfied with the interior of my apartment from the pictures i sent you ? (YES/NO)

2.Is the quoted price okay with you ? (YES/NO)

3.As i have explained previously,I am presently in Greece and very busy here,Do you accept to sign the contract documents through email ? (YES/NO)

4. Due to my previous experiences of meeting unserious tenants without confirming their payment,i wasted my time and money to come over.Therefore,Do you accept to transfer the deposit payment before my arrival as a sign to show your commitment. (YES/NO).

5.Which Nationality are You.Can you tell me briefly about yourself.

Once you answer my questions positively,we will be able to proceed with the rental procedures.The next step will be for me to scan you the Rental application form.

For assurance that you are dealing with an honest person,I am willing to send you a copy of my passport id after we have both signed the Rental Agreement form.The Rental agreement form will explain will be signed by both parties before you make the Security deposit payment.So you have to relax your mind.Your payment will be highly secured.If after my coming over to view you my apartment,you are not satisfy with the content/Inside of my apartment,your deposit payment will be refunded back to you in full.All this will be noted inside the agreement documents which both of us will sign before you make any payment.

Thanks for your mail.I am very glad to read from you.My apartment is fully furnished.You don't have anything to worry about.The rental period is unlimited.I am willing to reserve you my apartment till the period you wish,but before i can guarantee the reservation as i have told you,i will like to confirm your deposit payment as you have read from my previous email.Once we sign the necessary documents and you make the deposit payment.Moreso,the deposit payment will be paid via western union money transfer after you have received a copy of the contract documents.After confirming your fully signed documents together with your payment receipt from western union office,I assured you that my apartment is reserved for you. Lastly,I appreciate your acceptance to my terms and conditions.Since you answer YES to all my questions.Now,The next step now is for you to fill the Application form attached to this email,send it back to me after filling it so that i can forward it to my lawyer for the preparation of the Rental Agreement Document.Then i can scan the Rental Agreement Documents to you for you to read it and sign it.After which you can make the deposit payment according to how the Rental Agreement document will instruct you.As soon as all this is done,we can make an appointment on when i will be coming over to view you my apartment for you to look at the inside.okay.

Thanks for your mail.I will be glad to proceed with the contract.As i have explained to you earlier,i will prefer the payment to be made via western union money transfer because my bank account here is presently overdrawn.I will not be able to confirm your payment if it is being transferred to my bank account.
Besides,western union is faster.You just go to any western union outlet with my details below and the transfer will be done for you within 5 minutes.You don't need to set up any account.Find a nearest western union outlet to you and tell them you wish to make transfer.This will be done for you easily.
I have attached a copy of my British passport to this email together with my license.In case you want to make the transfer right away,below is the details needed at the western union for the transfer.
