Iraqian Soldier Love Scam - PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

I recently discovered a mail between this claimed to be army guy called Frank Oatman in the US Army inside Iraq. My mom who is a widow since a couple of years back now has fallen for this "guy". I know she has send money through Western Union and to a bank i Ghana. I confronted her with this a WARNED her. She wont belive me at all. he writes love notes to her all the time. The whole thing is about him getting a bag to her in Sweden with inportant papers and money. He calims to send out a "Diplomat" that needs money and more money to get this back out of the Gahna Costums. I downloaded the "Costum Document" and mailed it to Ghanas Embassy in Copenhagen and they mailed it back to me and said it was afke and that i should provide them with more material and contact the police. I fronted my mom with this and she got really upset. She said that this guy had said somethong like - What do they know up there... Im goin mental over here. I i dont know what to do. I have seen transfer statment on large amounts from my moms account, and im worried that these fuckers are gonna empty all of my moms founds and money that our father left her/us.

Please if you have any experience of something like this feel free to contact me ASAP! I also traced down his IP-number and it ended up in Ghana - SUPPRISE.. He claims he's in Iraq...

Unfortunatly your story sounds very familiar. It can be difficult to get your mother out of the greedy claws of these scammers. I hope your approach with confronting your mother with the scam didn't make your mother suspicious of you. Your mother may think that you are jealous, and that you don't want her to fall in love with another man. It wouldn't surprise me if your mother is telling the scammer about it, then the scammer will try to drive a wedge between you and your mother. So be carefull in what you do. But we can help you in this matter by writing a warning for this scam to your mother. You are not the first family member to arrive here after discovering a loved one is being scammed. And you are correct in that there is absolutely no doubt that the scenario you are describing is a scam. We will do our best to help you to help your mother.

You need to realize that this scammer has worked his way into your mother’s heart. He has made her feel like she was part of a real relationship, and he has said everything she wants to hear. He has also probably tried to build up an “us against the world” scenario—claiming that people who doubt the relationship don’t know or understand it, or are even trying to sabotage it because they are jealous or unhappy themselves, and he will try to convince her that she should be angry, offended, or even insulted by your suggestions that he is not real. It is also very difficult to accept the truth because in many cases, victims believe that falling for a scam means that they are stupid, naïve, or not capable of appropriate judgment. Add to that the fact that in general, it is hard for a parent to accept correction from a child, and you can easily see why it is important to tread carefully.

It is important that you do not treat your mother like a child, and that you try to avoid showing any response that suggests you think she is stupid. And the truth is, she is not stupid—it is very possible that she has had some doubts, but she has squashed them because she is choosing to follow her heart right now, not her head. There are many very intelligent people out there who have fallen for these scams—with the right approach, any person capable of falling in love can be manipulated.

You need to make it clear that you love her and care about her. Try NOT to make it about the money (or the scammer will try to convince her that you are trying to interfere so you can have her money). Instead, focus on what really matters—her happiness in the long term. Do not be harsh or judgmental—if you do, you are playing right into the scammer’s hands. If you can get her to read it, print out the romance scam sticky and bring it to her. Some people have had success with taking a kind of opposite approach—going through the scammers’ emails and information, working with her to prove is real and not a scammer (ultimately you won't be able to prove he is real, of course, because he isn't. Remember, too, that it takes time for everything to sink in, and don’t expect her to absorb everything at once. If there are other trusted family members she will listen to, or even a friend and role model like a pastor at her church, you might want to quietly enlist their help. Just don’t gang up on her unless you are truly prepared for the consequences.

The more information you can post here on the scammer, the more we can hopefully provide to convince her. Email addresses, actual emails (scripts are important); photos used, fake documents will all help to show that this is definitely a scam--we may also be able to track other uses of the same scripts/photos/etc. As David already said, if you would like a direct warning by phone, PM one of us with her info, and we can see if we can get a phone warning set up.

This soldier calls himself Frank Oatman and his mail is [email protected]. The IP adress i found is 212.85.205.123 and it points directly to Ghana, NOT Iraq as he claims to be in.

Well this is definitely very standard scammer fare. A few things I can point out right away.

It is actually 2 different poems the scammer copied.

-the English gets significantly worse (and this man is supposed to be American
-excessive use of terms of endearment (highlighted in red 3 different terms in one short paragraph!)--typical scammer here!
-he has suddenly lost his ability to capitalize properly

Here are some photoes this Frank Oatman sent to my Mom showing the so called "diplomat" Hasan Mohammed, who is sent out to deliver this "bag" to her. If you recognize this pic, feel free to drop me a line here!




He also sent this "Costums Document" to her. I forwarded this to Ghanas Embassy in Copenhagen. The mailed me back and told me that is was fake. My mom didn't belive me at all. The "Frank" had told her, -What do they know up there...

Note the little rectangles on the right pocket of the uniform in all 3 pictures. That is where the scammer edited the photos to cover up the name tag, since the name on the tag is Rodriguez, not Oatman.


A few additional points:
-You can see the parts he did NOT copy and paste, because the English is atrocious and is not consistent with an American author.
-An American soldier would know who his employer is. Our military is NOT called USA Army.
-I don't know where in the US he claims to be, but he probably doesn't even know where monsoon season occurs and which states have regular snowfall!
-You can see that virtually his entire "about myself" summary is copied and pasted with just a few google searches. For example:

My sister here in Europe has been a victim of someone who sounds like this guy. He told her his name is Frank Wilson, widow for 4 years, with a 10-year-old son. His pictures were not the same though, but that doesn't mean anything Even showed himself through a super low-resolution webcam which was pretty brave in the end, but the story goes the same otherwise. A diplomat bringing a box to my sister, suddenly getting stuck in an airport in Europe with no money etc...
But you DON'T mess with nordic women She knew right away what´s going on, googled and found this website and agreed on me registering and telling her story. No harm done otherwise, but emotionally it's been hard He was supposed to fly here next month, talked about leaving his country behind for this woman..and yes, my sister definitely would be worth it but like said, he was(is) a scam.

I am so upset with that imposter, He really knows how to lie like a dog…. You know there are two other people that started a conversation with me at the time I stopped chatting with Rodriguez . Eddie so called looks like the first picture with a fake passport that don’t look like him and this is how he reacted towards me, like I offended him, with a question I said to him and like if he knew me. Don’t know if David M. Rodriguez is the real person with the profile in face book. He never replies to my messages but the other ladies do chat with a person also trying to get info on opening an account. I have the photo he sent me with all the money on the table, that is what he wanted to show me and the pictures he has shown me do show his last name. Pretty scary!!!

Wow! I hope they catch these people but I know David M. Rodriguez would not make any mistakes on his spelling for being an important person that he is..
