unfortunately, not before I did lose a relatively small amount of money. I only discovered the information I'd been sent was false after I'd sent it. I was also contacted two days after I sent the money by another woman who he had attempted to scam, asking me if I'd been able to verify any information. I actually thought I had until I found a picture of the REAL Brian, amazingly enough, in an oil industry newsletter. The resemblance between the real Brian and the photos the fake Brian was posting was rather uncanny. We had actually been talking about meeting in person "when he got back to the States". Here is some of my last conversation with him, where he appealed for money not once, but twice. He has not contacted me since.
hoskinsbrian40 (11/30/2010 9:21:37 AM): Honey there is something I'm afraid I'm gonna ask you for
<snip>
hoskinsbrian40 (11/30/2010 9:25:11 AM): I need about $12k to pay up insurance for my check
Me: (11/30/2010 9:32:18 AM): What?? Why?? this makes no sense to me whatsoever.
hoskinsbrian40 (11/30/2010 9:34:55 AM): Because you haven't done an international contract overseas before that is why it doesn't make sense to you
Me: (11/30/2010 9:40:12 AM): Okay, how does it work? <snip of personal information revealing my location> I have known lots of men who have gone from here to work offshore rigs, and some have worked for non-US companies, which I'm sure would take in something similar to what you're talking about. Unless you do not work for the oil company whose rig you've been working on, it still makes no sense.
,Brian signed off sometime after this message sent>
hoskinsbrian40 (11/30/2010 11:55:26 AM): Sorry honey
Later on:
hoskinsbrian40 (11/30/2010 12:50:45 PM): Honey I don't know if I could get a loan from you for at least one week
Me: (11/30/2010 1:03:03 PM): No can do, there's nothing to give.
hoskinsbrian40 (11/30/2010 1:51:31 PM): Ok
hoskinsbrian40 (11/30/2010 1:51:48 PM): I'm just trying to figure where I could raise some money
hoskinsbrian40 (11/30/2010 1:51:53 PM): I'm so confused
Confused? Try an attempt at cunning. I had already learned the phone number he gave me was a MagicJack (if you're not familiar with them, they are USB devices that can be used anywhere in the world as a US phone number), that the person he said lived at the address he'd given me does not live there (though someone with that name does live nearby), and the photos he'd posted on Facebook revealed small things in the details that proved he didn't live where he said he did. Faced with all this evidence, I could come to no other conclusion than he was scamming. I'm just grateful I didn't lose any more money than I did.
All this came in the middle of a very challenging week for me. Eight hours after this conversation, I learned of the somewhat unexpected death of a very dear friend who had been part of my life since childhood. He proved his 'love' for me by not even showing up after I told him no money, therefore not standing by me while I was devastated by this loss. Ladies, DO NOT trust this man. If you have received a letter saying how beautiful he thinks you are and wants to get to know you, ignore him and block him. Thank you.
