Welcome to Scamwarners Isabelladonna.

The simple answer to your question is 'yes' - he is a scammer.

You went to a website looking for romance. The scammer went there looking for money. Payimg him the money he wants won't get you romance.

Anyone who asks you for money on a dating site is a scammer. The person you are dealing isn't called Michael Wells and everything he tells you is a lie. We cannot even know if it's the same scammer as all the others who use that name, as they copy the names they use.

All real people have friends, family and work colleagues they would ask for money before asking a girlfriend. If you tell him you won't pay him money he'll try to tell you that you aren't responding to his love, bcause he is trying to turn what he calls 'love' into something he can convert to cash. His love will last as long as your cash lasts.

The only thing to do is drop him and ignore his mails. He won't let go easily and he'll always come back to wanting cash and he'll stay nice as long as he thinks he has a chance of getting any from you. It isn't anything personal. He isn't looking for romance, he just wants money.

A warning sign is when some scammers do begin writing poetry, presumably to make the victim feel at ease.
Gomer made the point previously, the love would last only as long as the cash lasts'.
Happy to read you realised the scam and did not send any money.
A quick search saw several scammers using the name. I assume your scammer is one of the ones I viewed
These fraudulent individuals don't know what love is, as they are only interested in deception & fleecing people, then disappearing.
You asked what to do? A good first step is to stop all communication with the individual. Give no reason or excuse
If the scammer does persist, it will not be for long. They will stop but the unfortunate aspect is they move on to another victim.
Do not advise the scammer of the post here, the less they know, the better.
You may not realise it, but your post has saved someone in the future.
