Hello all,

I was looking for a job in Europe and came across a vacancy offered by someone who claimed to be an employer of Stavanger School in Norway. I did my search online and all the information this person provided was real so I sent my CV. He replied and asked me to send him documents, which included my university diploma, certificates, and a photo. But then I did something really stupid, he asked for my passport photo but I sent him a black and white photocopy of my passport by mistake! It had my passport number, name, date of birth, place of issue. Well, a couple of days later he said he wanted to offer me an interview and I got suspicious because they normally do not reply that soon. So I sent an email to the headmaster of the said school and she said someone was obviously misusing their employer's name and details. They have now shut down all information to prevent further abuse.

I immediately stopped contacting them and told this to my dad who have friends working in the immigration department and he said there was not much they could do with my information, nowadays, they cant forge a passport under my name because the machine and the database would trace out everything. Btw, I am holding a chinese passport which needs a visa to go almost anywhere in the world (well, that sucks isnt it?). So many people told me it would be useless cos it is of little value. However, I am still a bit worried that they might do something malicious, like opening a bank account or taking out a loan/transaction with my identity.

Anyway, I have filed a complaint to IC3 just to have a proof that someone has a bit of my personal information. There is little the local police could do for me. I did not open any account nor apply for credit cards using my passport, it was only used while I was travelling in Europe.

In the last few weeks, I have gone through hundreds of similar questions and most people said there wasn't a need of worrying over a copy of passport. Well, I do understand that anyone could have abused it since I gave it away many times when I was abroad. But I still get paranoid once a while since I tend to worry too much over what is unlikely to happen.

Welcome here nyangko.

Don't worrie too much, scammers will get lots of passport scans send to them by potential victims. When they ask for that, it is for them a sign of sincerity from the potential victim when they send it. If a potential victim would make a fuss about it, the scammer knows that the potential victim is not complieant, and will likely drop them.

Being a victim doesn't mean you stand alone. We're here to help you.

Thanks! I just hate myself for sending the scammer my personal information. I know I am a bit overreacting but it takes a while before I could let it go.

I forgot to mention that the scammer used the email address [email protected]. They even built an "official" website which was removed later.

I tried to trace the scammer's ip but then realised that he was actually using gmail to reply my messages (stupid thing was that when I received his email, my hotmail indicated that it was from the above address, if I knew it was from someone using a gmail account, I would have stopped right away! ). I was a bit confused because when I hit the reply button, it was still the above address that appeared in the address bar. Could someone send emails from gmail yet still looks like they are using another account? I am not very smart with computer so I want to know if it's possible.

Below is the header of the scammer's email, I have faked my own email add in the header in case the scammer sees it in the future.

Yes nyangko, it's possible to use a central mailbox and send and receive mail from other mailboxes without the mails showing they've been sent to and from the central mailbox. It may be shown somewhere in the header but most people don't look at headers when they receive mail.

I scambait scammers and I do that all the time as I have to use a lot of names so that they don't realise that I'm baiting them. I operate from one cental mailbox and can choose what mailbox I send it from. It can be gmail or yahoo. It doesn't require great computer knowledge to do it. Most people have no need to do it.

Non-EU citizens should go here to find out about obtaining a visa to work as an au pair in the UK

Whenever payment is requested by Western Union you're dealing with a scammer
