Hi everyone. New here.
Recently learned my lesson about romance scams.
Basically I went on craiglist checking personal ads. Those personal ads are mostly spam but one ad caught my eye. I replied to an attractive christian woman who claims to be 27. She tells me about herself, how she's a missionary doing "one last assignment in nigeria".
I was skeptical when I read the word nigeria, but emailed her back anyway. This person(may not even have been a female) emails me. We go on back and forth couple weeks. She mentions how busy she is helping/praying for a "sick little boy who needs treatment". "She" asks me to donate any amount. She even emails a photo of the boy.
Foolishly I (only) lost $100 through western union. This person was smooth, really pulled at my heart strings. Days later, "Lean Marcus" is so grateful how generous I am, she' s now in love with me, wants me to marry her. At this point, its been three whole weeks since we first emailed each other. I know something's wrong. Her writing is weird, skips certain words, but surprisingly has perfect sentences when she talks of love and romance. "She" moved too fast. She declared her love for me and wants to meet me, saying I'm her soulmate.
"Lean Marcus" books her flight, forwards the itinerary to me, but suddenly can't cash her check from her missionary church, wanting me to pay $1450. I thought, "no way!"
I confronted her, saw through the lie. She then replied back saying how desperately she needs my help to pay the remaining balance of her flight ticket. I reply to her, telling her she's lying, scamming. Should have done this sooner, but I search her IP address. She's nowhere near being in nigeria. Her emails originate from the US. I call her on it and she says I insulted her, no longer 'loves me' etc. She 'felt betrayed' and said goodbye in the final email.
So my first encounter in a romance scam. A part of me wanted to believe her but small details just didn't add up...
