I was wondering what kind of technology these guys are using on their end? How advanced are they?

Do they have software that can hack into your email or computer? What precautions should we be taking after the scam has been realized and we cut off contact?

i changed email passwords, but should i be wary that they can get info still? I gave no personal financial info.

It is a good idea to change passwords and in some cases password reset questions, because the scammers may have enough personal info about you to guess or reset your password.

Romance scammers (and most other advance fee scammers) are not typically hackers (though they often claim to be when they start threatening). The truth is, if they were good at hacking, they would be stealing money that way instead of scamming--it would be faster and easier! With that said, though, even a criminal with no hacking skills can buy and send a virus that logs your keystrokes or make your system vulnerable--so it is always a good idea to make sure your antivirus has the latest definitions, and perform a full system scam.

If you have done those things, and you keep your computer protected with appropriate anti-virus software, your scammer should pose no threat to your computer and/or online accounts.
