I got a call from a man with a heavy accent stating that he was from windows security service and that my pc had been hacked within the last 24 hours.
He asked me to turn on my pc and press Ctl > windows symbol > r at the same time and then asked what could I see. I told him there was nothing coming up on the screen.
He then asked me to open explorer and delete the address contents; then type in logmein123, I asked why he was directing me to this site and he said it was so that he could check my pc for virus's etc. I asked what his name was and after a delay he told me Wil Smith. I told him I was not going to allow him to have access to my pc and he asked what the problem was. I told him that I had not initiated the call and that I would like his phone number.
The number he gave me was 02032878834. I rang off and checked 1471 and his number had been witheld. I think people should be aware of the risks of allowing someone remote access to their pc and I would be grateful if you could confirm whether this is a known scam.

Welcome Kez,

Good job on catching the scam before you were hurt by it.

This is a known scam. Most often, the scammers actually use the remote access to install a virus, and then they turn around and charge the victim to remove the virus they installed--but of course once the virus is installed, the scammers may also sniff out financial information, such as bank accounts, credit card numbers, etc. and they may use that information to steal from the victims in other ways too.

i did get a call too.. i'm not sure if they're playing dumb because they're really good at it. they talk to you like you're some innocent kid and tell you things that are never there. and i realized that even before he started reading the script to me... i've read a lot of these from http://www.callercenter.com and these tactics they use, they're age old!

gurleenkaur, the answer is don't give access to your computer to someone who rings you up.

For general safety and security, never give anyone who rings you up information. Don't give your banking information, credit card information. Don't give out your ID numbers or anything you would not tell a stranger who you need on the street.

Just because some one asks for information doesn't mean you have to give it to them.

Just had a call from a guy with an accent and could not understand what he said but from Microsoft and said he had warning signs our computer was infected with viruses asked to have access to our computer. I said I was not interested and then my husband got on the phone and let him have it. No one is getting into our computer that is for sure. Beware and do not let anyone have access to your computer as I read this is most likely a scam. Besides if we have issues we will contact Microsoft ourselves but we know enough about computers to fix it anyway. Sad people have to watch out for this type of thing.

They actually called me today, and my children and I were laughing because first I asked whose computer was hacked? He gave me the name of the woman who used to have my now unlisted phone number. So then I said, I am so sorry, but I don't own a computer, he stuttered and then hung up. And of course, the number was blocked.
