2nd email by Scammer:

Since you are satisfied with my flat and i see the willingness to have
it when you arrive, i want you to understand that i cant just come all
the way from Cardiff in vain, and also iw ill want a situation
whereby every issue on the tenancy agreement form can be settled on
that day and also the handling over of the keys, i have resolved that
a willing and serious tenants should be able to make transfer of the
security deposit and the rent fee from your country with your friends
or relative s name as the sender and your name as the reciever which
will make the transfer available to recieve by you in uk which a
confirmation will be made on the transfer done to check if he or she
is capable of paying the rent before arranging for a viewing or to
retain the flat till your arrival and also stop other people from
viewing the flat and to be sure that after seeing my flat on your
arrival i ll get paid after because i wont afford to come in vain or
come twice on basis of the rent.

Please note that the transfer would have to be done through western
union or money gram from where you are into london so that it can be
available for you to pick up when you get here, all i need is the
reciept as a proof to show me that the funds is remitted with western
union in your name, when this is done i ll be present in london on
tomorrow depending on the day you choose. and also so
as follow you to the western union outlet cose to the flat to recieve
my rent fee, Please note that any money sent by your partner can as
well be picked back by your self after it has been confirmed on the
internet website of western union or money gram post office that it is
available for you.

Please note that the cost of transfer will be decucted from the rent
fee and refunded to you when you come for viewing.Once the transfer is
within uk,you will only need to call me so i can have it forwarded to
my lawyer to make a check if truly the money is there in the UK
western union or money gram post office website internet.

Since you will be needing the flat on your arrival, if you can make
the transfer first thing tomorrow and my lawyer confimrs then i ll reserve
the flat for you till your arrival, the amount you are to transfer to
your name is 400gbp and 500gbp for the refundable damage deposit which
in total is 900gbp.

Get back to me so i can know what next to do

My reply:

I want to see the flat, can we arrange an appointment for tomorrow afternoon?

3rd email by Scammer

Hello,
Thanks for your email,i understand what you are trying to say
ok,once again Thanks for your mail, I don't say you should send money
to me before you view my flat and i will never ask you to provide your
bank statement or your payment slip cause it is illegally used
sometime,i was only trying to secure my flat and my new job.but to let
you know that i am not so much interested in your money and you can
view the flat you go to any western union near you and you make the
transfer of the deposit and a month rent by using your name as the
sender's name and also your Friend name as the receiver's name so you
will only have access to your money. so what i only need from you is
the western union Transfer scanned copy Receipt given to you after
making the transfer so that i can be able to view the receipt and also
had to to call the associations that you have really shown your
capability in the flat, then i can invite you for the viewing and also
schedule my self for the viewing, then after the viewing must have been
scheduled and you must have signed the contract form you can go and
pick the money you transferred and give it to me after we must have
agreed and schedule the viewing with you,but immediately you arrived
the flat for the viewing i'll give you the transfer charges incurred
in the transfer, but i'm so very sure it won't be more than 40pounds
or 70pounds which i can be able to refund back to you as soon as you
arrive the flat,i will be waiting to read from you as soon.
Regards.

Actually, he is after your money. The scanned Western Union slip is enough for him to collect it. It's a known scam and one that has caught a lot of people because it does seem plausible if you don't know how insecure a payment system it is if the details are given to someone you don't know personally.

I've never used Wester Union, could he withdraw money using just a scanned slip?
For example: i pay you 10$ via Western Union, i give him the scanned slip and what can he do with it?

As Arnold says, he will have enough information to collect the money whatever amount is on the receipt.

In theory, it need some ID as well as the payment slip details, but in practice, scammers have no trouble collecting payments.

Personally, I think it's largely down to corrupt agents. For example even with fake ID, how can a Nigerian pass himself of as US military in a Lagos WU outlet?
