This past June my husband and I received notice from our apartment complex that they were terminating our lease. This was all because a neighbor that we were having problems with lied to the complex and manipulated facts to get us out. Anyway I started to look for a new home. I looked through the local paper and only found other complexes. I was fed up with apartments and wanted to rent a home if possible.
I eventually went to Craigslist to look. I watch a lot of Peoples Court and Judge Joe Brown so I know about scams of Craigslist. I found two ads for houses that were within our price range. The response I got was from a man in Africa claiming that he was a Missionary for Africa. There was a post to a legitimate site. I told him that I was interestd in the home and he e-mailed me a lease application.
This application seemed strange to me, but my husband kept pushing me. Since I knew that this man was in Africa and I know about the scams I wanted to investgate this as much as I could. I looked up the property records and the name that the man used was the same as on the records. I still wasn't happy so I wanted to do background check, but my husband was satified and still insisted that I send him the money. I still wasn't going to Western Union this person any money until I was absolutly sure that I was doing everything I could to check this out. Finally I typed the address one last time and this time there was another ad for the same house. This ad was going to for heck of a lot more money and the kicker was that the ad said and I quote "Please do not respond to Craigslist ads for $700, $800, or $900 per month. They are a scam."
Needless to say I told my husband right away and we weren't out any money. I did cost us some time, but we are still able to get out of the apartment and now we live in a house that we own. I definatly take this as a lesson learned and a victory.
