I just got an e-mail that read the exact same as what you posted. What was the outcome? My gut says SCAM! The first message received said "The item still available". That was all it said. When I replied, it immediately shot back the message you posted.

SCAM SCAM SCAM! What'll happen is that you'll receive a fake money order / certified check / whatever - most people deposit this in their bank, and then ship / deliver / release the item being purchased. But then, about a week later, when the "originating" bank receives the check they identify it as a fake - and immediately reverse the charges to the receiving bank, and they reverse your deposit.

I bet the first "Is this item still available?" email came from a different email account than the one that sent the "I want to buy your item" reply. I think that's to make it harder for craigslist users to "flag" scam emails (there's a link at the bottom of any email replies sent to sellers that go through CL's "anonymizer") Digression aside, that's one clue this is probably a scammer.

Don't fall for it. ESPECIALLY if the check includes not only some "extra" bonus "for your trouble / consideration / hooey", but also some larger amount you are supposed to "wire to my assistant for delivery expenses, etc." I don't think any sane assistant would take a job where they got paid by random 3rd parties per work item!

Oh, BTW, I bet they don't actually refer to the item they're interested in at any time - because it's a form letter. I got one once when I was selling a (very common) used cell phone and the buyer said something like "I have been looking long time exactly one of these! Please treat as sold now..." heh.

Bottom line - there's probably a reason for the indirection going on ("mis"direction?") Sell Local! Deal Directly!

IGNORE THEM. IGNORE THEM. oh.. well, do flag the original "is this item available" mail if you can but otherwise IGNORE THEM.

Every time I get a potential buyer that starts off with "Is this item still available?" I'm already certain it's gonna be another one of these scammers.

I received the same email today nearly if not exactly word for word. When a buyer offers to pay the seller more than the original asking price because of any potential "hardship" he's causing by asking to go through a unique purchasing process, that isn't a hint, it's a billboard.

Since were beating this dead horse, two things, why can I not get access to a Reliable global IP database? And two, our Craiglist shopin' buddy <[email protected]> stamps a private IP - 10.68.203.39 - which bounced off yet another private IP - 10.180.93.99. -, I get it, my "friend" matt is just one computer in the network he utilizes. Fantastic, Love It. Why can I not locate the network geographically? I just want to send a pizza, I'm sweet like that. :)

He's requesting a location for a mail drop, correct me if i'm wrong, but when the reply is granted access through his network his NAT reverts back to his private IP. Right? I mean, if by chance the reply was just a big scripted @#%$you, His geotag is public, well if someone actually had working database. The poor fella would have to take five minutes away from trying to ripping people off to join a new crew(yes, I know it's scripted - he's watching porn) even better.

I can obviously do nothing, now in my thirties I fancy my tech skills on par with the average third grader, but they type better. Brats. :P But it makes me think. Are there any modern day do-gooder's with skills that are willing to donate some of their time to the welfare of the common man? And no, I don't mean a DDoS on your neighborhood Key bank branch because they just charged me $2 to take twenty out. I did that to myself, i'll survive THAT financial ruin just fine thanks. Really, I buy ya a beer. Unless your twelve.....nvm the beer. Six pack of Mountain Dew and a Playboy. Best I can offer
