Technically I wasn't the one scammed, however one of my apartments was used in a renting scam on craigslist. You can image my surprise when some guy bangs on the office door only to inform me that his key doesn't work on the door of an apartment that is suppose to be empty due to the fact I hadn't finished going through the applications.
Well as you can image if you seen anything about the numerous scams, the guy had found an ad for the apartment on craigslist for about half of what I was asking for it. Which should have raised warning bells, I'm not sure you can find a decent apartment anywhere for 420 a month much less with two bedrooms, by the beach, in a good area.
Its sad really if the guy had stopped by at any point he probably wouldn't have been scammed. I have a very visible office and a phone number posted on a sign. Not much I could do about it. He wasn't willing to pay as much as I asked for and had no deposit. Didn't help that he wasn't even willing to discuss it and insisted that the apartment was his and he wasn't paying more then 420. Ended up having to call the cops.
Bottom line, if it sounds too good to be true then it is.
