Hi All

One of my close friends is being romanced scammed. I have evidence, emails the scammer has sent me using his email address, the photos the scammer used, the scammers email address... The scammers keeps making up lies about me to poison my friend against me, saying that i had called and abused her, sent letters to her house and threatening emails, none of which i had done. Mainly because i didn't want to communicate directly with the scammer and give them any ammo against me. The problem was made obvious in May when the scammer joined Facebook, the photos were obviously stolen model shots and the endless declarations that he was the love of her life, he was her world etc.... The scammer is claiming to be a model in New York getting medical treatment, though all of the emails i have received from the scammer have come from Peru and West Africa, they were professionally traced, using all of the header information.
I have gone to my friend with the evidence, but i think that he may be either being blackmailed or is really under their brain washing, because he tried to claim he had sent some of the emails, but had no answer for me when i said, "but that one came from Peru", its like he was covering for them. So this is why i am concerned it has turned to blackmail. He did end things with the scammer a few months ago, but then when him and i re-established contact, she started telling him lies about me and then she was suddenly back in his life. It's so confusing as to why my friend just can't seem to get away from them, i know he has tried several times.
The scammer has also taken to stalking my social media, like twitter, and writing me nasty and threatening emails regarding it.
I tried to help my friend early on by posting links of my facebook page about romance scams etc.. and telling him to watch Catfish, but the scammers caught on to the and as they have his passwords to his facebook and email, they blocked me. I am currently unblocked.
I can assure you he is not a scammer, as not only have we spent time together face to face, but everything is in his real name, so if you were part of a scam, you wouldn't use your real name.
I really want to help my friend, he is such a good and sweet person, who is way too trusting and easily manipulated.
Another strange thing is his Facebook, I know the scammers use it, but its his friends list, the scammers have deleted many friends, but when i look at how many friends he has on my laptop it says 218, but on my iPhone it says 194... Has anyone ever seen this before? its like they have created a mirror account or something. When he got rid of the scammer the first time, the number of friends matched on my 2 devices, but now that they are back, it is not matching again... I have reported this to Facebook. Sorry if none of this makes sense!
Can anyone help me? i want to get these people jailed, as i have their IP's and header info and the stolen photos, surely that can help an investigation. My friend has been forbidden to see me, so i can't get anything from him, like Western Union receipts... I just don't know what to do.... HELP!

Welcome to ScamWarners Lizzyrh78 , I am sorry that such difficult circumstances have brought you here.

Have you searched our site to see if the scammer's information comes up? Some times getting a friend to check out site will help convince them that they are dealing with a scammer. Many people who get pulled into scams are so invested, both emotionally and financially that they don't want to hear the truth. Some times the truth has to come from another source.

Unfortunately, getting a scammer arrested is virtually impossible. Typically they do not live in a jurisdiction which will go after them. The evidence is sketchy as they hide behind photos taken from other people and they do not use their real name. They are very convincing and lie as easily as they breath.

Please post up information about the scammer if the information is not already on our site.

Lizzy,
Sorry to hear of your problems. Some more things you might want to try, if you haven't already done so.

www.tineye.com

Use the above to see if the photos the scammer has sent can be traced to the original poster, or other sites.
You could also post one or two here, see if we can identify the person in the photos.

Put the scammer's name and email address into Google, see what comes up. You may well get links to other sites dealing with scammers.

If the emails contain some flowery looking speech that might have come from a book, put a snippet of it into Google, see if that brings up an original source.

^ the above group specialise in African and Russian based romance scammers, they have a large database of photos and identities which might match up to the one you are dealing with.

If you need any more help please either post here, or send a private message containing any information that you can so we can do the research.
