(after reading this site for a few hours, I'm realizing how often I've been scammed in the past few years)...... Hope this helps:

About 2 months ago, my husband and I got a phonecall to our landline phone. Our caller ID showed that it was from a Skype user. As a few family members use Skype sometimes, I answered the phone (I don't usually answer it unless I recognize the caller). It was a young-sounding guy (20's??), claiming that he was my oldest nephew. He knew my name, my husband's name, where I lived, etc..... Stupidly, I said, "XXX? That doesn't sound like you". I was suspicious already. He went on to say that he was vacationing in England and he had a bad cold. I again said, "It doesn't sound like you. What's my husband's name?" and he answered me correctly. I asked where I currently live, and he got it right. Okay, now I'm stumped. He asked if I've spoken to his mom (my sister) lately and I said I hadn't. I know--I gave too much info! As soon as I was asking him more and more questions, he hung up. I'm sure he was going to get to the point where he'd say he couldn't get ahold of his parents and he was stranded somehow and needed some $$. I knew all of this to be false, as I KNEW where each family member was at the time. I immediately reported it to Skype and the internet FBI. They followed up and said I could proceed with informing my local police dept, but that this person wasn't in this country. It freaked me out that someone could have that much information on me. I'm VERY careful about the information I put out there (or so I thought).

Criminals will get your information somehow, remember, they don't play by the rules when it comes to data protection and respecting privacy. I once worked in the offices for a major bank and one day an employee was led out of the building in handcuffs, he had been supplying the personal data of customers to criminals.

All you can do is protect yourself as much as you can and don't fall for their c**p which you didn't :)
