Hi Melissa, Welcome to Scamwarners. Good for you for spotting the scam before you became a victim. And it is great to hear that this site helped. Just to make sure we have some of the facts straight in case somebody else searches for the information.

The person used the name sgt derik palmer or Sargent Derik Palmer? Does he have a MySpace page? If so, please feel free to post that information too.

Also, the person that you were given to send the money to: "jennifer jones 334 duffy field road nc" Was there a town name given?

What do you mean by ts2?

Please feel free to post any email addresses or telephone numbers that the scammers used. Any information that might help somebody else from becoming a victim.

Welcome Melissa!

Glad you avoided being scammed and appreciate you coming to help get the word out! If you have any more information you can share (e.g. photos he is using, or his initial emails to you, as they are often scripts the scammer will re-use) and you can post them, it will help us in creating a more complete profile.

hi all, fortunately i was not the one being scammed, it is a friend that i work with, i started to get suspicious about it... he goes by the name michael joe, claims he is a captain in the military, he found my friend on my-space... she has a picture of herself posted, from that picture you can tell she is physically challenged (perfect target) i would sit with her and read his conversations to her, and just as described he asked her to marry him, send money to get that phone line going, he told her she needs to request for his leave, etc...... im a suspicious person by nature and when i seen that it got my wheels turning so i started replying to him pretending to be her ( she was right next to me of course ) and when i started questioning things he would start with the..... dont you love me? are you playing me for a fool? why dont you believe me? etc...... and he wanted the money right away, claims if she didnt have it all right now she could send what she had as a deposit, i am still trying to figure out how to break it to her that he is a scammer without hurting her, he is praying on my friend who is so starved for male attention and affection ( you could say )... anyway jus wanted to share this, im glad i sneakily got all this info on him from her without her getting suspicious,,, again he goes by CAPTAIN MICHAEL JOE nickname micjoe ( i think )

You have to be cautious sugar808 because it may be totally apparent to you that this person is a fake and a scammer, but it's going to take a lot to convince your friend. It's sad to say that you're right that the disabled are a preferred target of these scammers, and it will be easy for your friend to see you as just another person who is trying to take away her happiness and dreams. I've known victims pay money to scammers ahead of paying for food and worse. The connection is probably a lot stronger than you think.

Your prime concern should be to ensure that she doesn't send him any money. If you are aware of a request for money you need to convince her that you don't pay a US serviceman money by Western Union or MoneyGram which is undoubtedly how he'll want it because he won't have a bank account, and certainly not in that name.

Maybe you can raise the point about sending money beforehand, so that when it happens, she'll be more cautious.

Whenever payment is requested by Western Union you're dealing with a scammer
