Scam Alleging A Work-At-Home Opportunity with CMC Limited

I was recently contacted by an alleged recruiter for CMC Ltd. about a work-at-home opportunity. When I expressed an interest, I was immediately directed to access YAHOO!Messenger (first red flag) to interview with Mrs. Alice Johnson. During the interview I was instructed to save any questions I had for the end of the interview. I answered several questions, Including contact information that should have been available to the interviewer from my resume on CareerBuilder.com. This was (supposedly) the place from which my original contact was made. Despite being asked such a redundant question (second red flag) , I decided to go along and answered questions about my level of interest and whether or not I was familiar with CMC Limited. I was then given some basic information about the company, all of which checked out on the company website, which I Google'd during the interview to verify information being given, (existence of the company, locations of physical offices and operations, etc...) As we finished speaking, it seemed everything was on the up and up.

I was also told that the company would be cutting a check and sending it to me within a few days with which to purchase the software for the work I would be doing.(third red flag) A list was given and I was told these programs would be available from a short list of approved vendors. All of the software was common to general business accounting for medium to large businesses, so again, it did not seem too far-fetched yet, even though the warning flags were beginning to add up. I was asked to report each day via YAHOO!Messenger with Mrs. Alice Johnson at a set time. The first day, she was late by about 10 minutes and did not respond when I checked in until nearly 45 minutes after the appointed time. At that point she was a bit frustrated, as reflected in her conversation, and the interaction was very brief. Basically, I was told to just report in again the following day to receive tracking information for the check that was to be sent for the software.

At this point I decided to investigate more thoroughly and was talking to my son about the interaction. He suggested first that I come to scamwarners.com to see if this was a known scam. I could find similar reports in some respects, but nothing about CMC Ltd or Mrs. Alice Johnson. My son's next suggestion, though, was what eventually led to the discovery that this whole mess was a scam. He asked me to call or email the company from the website contact information and verify that the job offer was a legitimate offer from a known representative for the company. I did exactly that and received a reply that afternoon from a verifiable representative of CMC Ltd. in New Delhi, India. He regretted to inform me that the information and job offer I had received was NOT Legitimate and politely encouraged me to apply with the company through proper channels via the company website.

I promptly returned to YAHOO!Messenger and my contact, Mrs. Alice Johnson, and informed 'her' that I was no longer interested in anything she had to say since I had received official notice from the company that her entire job offering and software purchase scheme was a scam. I even did her the courtesy of copying to her the email I had received in response to my inquiry to the company about the job offer. She has tried to continue contact with me each day, but I have denied her requests.

I post this in the hopes it will help someone else to resist falling prey to this scam.

Any time you are hired after only an online chat interview, it is a scam. Please post the transcript of the chat interview and any emails exchanged between you and the scammer. Include full headers, minus your name and address.

When the check arrives, you can shred it or report it to police, but do not attempt to cash it. It is fake.

I was sent a text message about my resume on career builder. I was asked to attend an online interview via yahoo messenger. My point of contact was usernmaer: jenniecrawford1900 who said to be a Manager for the CMC company in Austin Texas. I too conducted an online research during the interview. I saved my conversation below. Hope this helps. Stay away from scams.

Additionally the address you provided does NOT coincide with the one on CMC's website. Unfortunately I am not comfortable with providing personal information until I am certain that this is a legit job offer. I know how it feels to get ripped off your hard earned money or sweat .I dont like the word scam let alone getting myself involved in it.

The same thing happened to me. Almost exactly the same line of questioning and information. In fact I am supposed to receive the check and the "official" offer tomorrow.

I hope no one falls for this. And thank you to those who originally posted, your posts confirmed my doubts.
