Just been scammed for 6,400 sterling see below

Add for camper posted on Autotrader and moved me to ebay buy it now or so I thought
I received verification from ebay of purchase and provided with payment details. Received verification of funds received and authorisation for seller to ships campervan.
Watch out for ebay user 'kayb200' was using email [email protected]

I have been in touch with ebay ( not inspiring me with any confidence) apparently through my own searches Kayb200 is a repeat offender and ebay not shutting it down?
Also in touch with Action Fraud. I do have the guys address, picture and business details though. Any advise or suggestions welcome.

We are devastated as we have two young children our girl has Luekeamia and our son Autism. Both were looking forward to the motorhome and an opportunity to get out, difficult with a child with Autism.

Subject: Re: A lead from Motorhomes.autotrader.co.uk (SR52GKN FIAT DUCATO £6,400)

Hello,
Its still for sale. Excellent condition with no damages or any faults. All necessary documents available. My current location is Scotland due to my work commitments, If this is going to be a quick sale I will let it go for £6,400 delivered at my costs. Are you familiar to eBay? I will list the motorhome on eBay Motors for £6,400 buy it now price and I will send you a link to my auction, so you can buy it immediate.
As soon as you will confirm the payment to eBay, I will proceed delivery without any additional costs for you.
In case you are not familiar with them, please read their Buyer Protection and will see that they cover 100% the transaction done through them up to £50,000. You will receive the motorhome with all documents. As you know eBay is the best company of online transactions. If indeed interested in it and have the funds, I will list it on eBay, as I have a 100% positive feedback with them.
Please let me know your decision. I am unable with phone so please use email as primary contact option. I dont use phone for internet deals.
Thank you

Alice

Welcome to Scamwarners 2014victormonaher.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss and you are by no means the only victim of this crime which is operated by by an organised criminal gang that has overwhelmed most ad sites on the internet, and they operate a massive number of money laundering accounts with UK banks.

I cover just Autotrader UK normally just cars and I usually pick up over 100 fraudulent adverts daily and sometimes in excess of 200 and I try to post as many as I can in that thread. I know of other people who cover ebay, and Gumtree which is something of a lost cause as regards fraud.

http://www.scamwarners.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=82849

Considering that I only pick up adverts that are out and out fraud where there is no vehicle for sale, and that there are many other types of fraud I don't even try to detect, you'll understand how risky it is to rely on ad sites.

This is no comfort to you and I have to say that the criminals face little obstacle or impediment to carrying out their crimes and the likelihood of them getting caught is minimal. The greatest risk is to those who haven't dealt with ad sites before and assume that everything is above board. Most people are also unaware of the existence of thousands of UK bank accounts set up or being used to launder stolen funds.

It would be unwise for people to rely on the authorities, banks or ad sites to do anything about it, so the only answer is to educate people about the risks.

I'm afraid that it is very unlikely that you'll get your money back, though you may be able to get the bank account that was used shut down, but the money will be long gone. No one will accept responsibility.

i suspect that the 'ebay' part of the transaction was performed using spoofed mails and fake ebay pages spoofed to look like ebay. That's how they normally operate.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

Unfortunately the most frequent victims of these fraudulent adverts are those who can least afford to lose the money.

Contacts have been made with ad sites, banks and other associated parties and I don't foresee anything changing soon. The reality is that ad sites primarily get their revenue from sellers and they owe no duty to buyers. As long as sellers believe that the ad sites attract buyers things will remain unchanged. The fact is that unless you see anything being offered for sale in real life you can't be certain that it even exists.

With the personal circumstances you have detailed you may be able to raise the issue with your MP and give greater prominence to this situation.

Thanks for the feedback Terence much appreciated. A very expensive lesson but you are to be commended for your work in highlighting these fraud steers. Just a pity I did not do a more thorough search.

Kind regards

If I could point out a way to get your money back I would but I don't want to set you on a 'wild goose chase', but you could try your MP. You can do that online and it's quite an easy process. If you have a local newspaper they might be prepared to run your story and I'm only suggesting this because publicity could cause someone to show some compassion. It's a long shot but worth a try in your situation.

Overall the situation is a complete disgrace and I feel it personally every time another victim turns up. Being retired and because of ill health I can spend more time on this than most other humans could, but even so I note that last night I didn't pick up all the scams which is quite shocking. Online fraud is becoming so widespread and well organised it poses a massive threat to business as well as consumers.

Even the UK government suggested putting access to benefits and medical services online which ignored the fact that many elderly people simply don't have internet access, and I wouldn't allow my elderly mother anywhere near the internet.

Even if I don't post full lists every day of fraudulent adverts I'll still be devoting the same amount of time to them, but just in a more effective way.

Thanks Terence for your feedback, much appreciated. I was just contacted by a lady who was being peddled the same scam and luckily found the scam Warner post when googling the fictitious email address. I hope many others will benefit from this and be spared the ordeal. Keep fighting the good fight.

Kind regards

One major problem has been the ease with which scammers have been able to phish ebay users and car dealers log in details allowing the scammer to take over their accounts.

The thing is that now with the 'GameOverZeus' malware, anyone who is foolish enough to allow their account to be compromised in this way is equally vulnerable to this new threat and, it's a lot more lucrative to wipe out their bank account than through any ad site accounts they use.

The groups operating on ad sites don't appear to be connected to the 'Game Over' group but it won't take long for them to join up and share tactics because the rewards would be remarkable.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting this to this site!

I was almost about to purchase a classic mini from [email protected] other email [email protected] posted on Gumtree, but was suspicious when my questions weren't being answered, so I decided to simply google the email address and that brought me to this post.

Thank you, it just proves that sites like this work.
