Hello everyone!
So this is the 5th scammer this month for me and I'm getting tired of getting this unbelievable emails for items that are not even worth the trouble. In this case, "rank moore" [email protected] contacted me through "Schwarzes Brett" (German local adds website) in regards to a plastic sorting box I was selling for 5€ with the following text in bad German asking for the price (which was already visible in the add anyway):

das ist der Höchstpreis.?
Mfg

I was already suspicious, but decided to write back, saying I would accept 4€ for it. He then replied as follows:

hallo,

Moore.

Hello,
Thanks for the mail, the price is okay by me,so you will get the payment via MONEY ORDER or CASHIER CHECK,but the money will more than your asking price okay, when you received it from the postal man ,you will take it to your bank account and you will get the money in 2 to 3 day in your bank account okay, and you will deduct you asking price and your bank charges from the payment ,so you will transfer the remaining money left to the shipping agent , the shipper can prepare for the shipment ok,so you will need to forward your full information ,

name...............

phone number.............

your address................
city.................

zipcode..............
.
country....................

so i can issue the payment for you ok,i wait to hear from you.
Regards
Moore.

I don't know how naive these people think we are, or how stupid they themselves are. Why would I go through so much trouble to sell a 4€ item? (then again, considering how often they've contacted me, I'm starting to think they are targeting me specifically, but maybe I'm just paranoid) Anyhow, I hope this information helps someone out there.

Thanks for posting! The German is machine-translated from the English, which was written by an African. I noticed that partway through reading the German, then looked at the English, which confirmed it.

@Watcha

You are not being targeted directly.

Scammers are responding to 1,000's of ad's daily in hopes of one victim.

Please sell face to face in a public place.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.

@vonpaso xlura well both the German and the English version are very badly written (but the German one doesn't even make sense for me) I just can't imagine someone falling for this (which, in a way, is good).

@Bryon Williams yeah, you're right...I just had never gotten so many scam emails in such a short time (especially for cheap items), so my paranoia gets a bit triggered.

Victims do fall for it. But we do like to keep the scammers stupid. :D This is why we do not educate/correct them in proper writing skills.

These scammers often just pick a website and respond to EVERYTHING, regardless of cost or what the item actually is. All they want is ANY excuse to overpay with a fake check or money order or a fake paypal payment so they can collect the "difference" in cash. The results can be quite comical sometimes, like in the case of a scammer who insisted to a target that he was going to arrange for a shipper to pick up his cemetery plot!

While they are active year round, these scammers are often extra active during the holiday season. They know that there are more people who just don't see or pay attention to the little signs like the poor English because they are (a) desperate to pick up some cash for holiday gifts or (b) just too busy with the extra activity this time of year to really think about it.

As VX said, the German is particularly bad because it was translated from English that was poor in the first place.
