I almost got scammed by someone who got my contact info through Care.com. I got a text (248-502-6238) from a "Jessica Parker" followed by an email ([email protected]) requesting my babysitting services. Below is my account:

Brief Summary

"Jessica Parker," a hard of hearing mother, wanted a caretaker for her wheelchair bound 6 year old child. We went back and forth for awhile until she asked that I pay for a wheelchair ($2550) and its delivery fee ($125), promising a check was in the mail to cover my expenses. Shortly after I cut off contact with the scammer.

Thanks for replying to my AD . My name is Jessica Parker. I recently moved from pheonix to michigan with my family but i`m moving to new york on the 23rd of january and i will need a nanny for my son immediately. His name is joe, 6years old and the time would be from 9am to 4pm Saturdays and Sundays only. This is a long term position but its fine to start temporary. Some weekdays are also flexible if you are available but we may need to discuss that in person.I`m willing to pay 18/hour. I believe its a great pay and i`am paying that much because i want quality care for my son. The start date is 24th of january.I lost my husband and my 2 year old daughter in September. It was my late husband`s birthday and he decided to take the kids out while i was still at work. Joe happens to be the only survival from the accident but
He currently uses a wheelchair. I have had terrible times in the last few months and this is one of the reasons i have decided to move because staying here brings back some sad memories. Kindly be honest if you would be able to do this kind of childcare because i want the best care for Joe. I`m hard of hearing and can only communicate via writing, reading lips or text messaging. I hope that isn`t a problem? I`m easy going and love to laugh. I can send you a picture of me and joe in my next email. I want a nanny who is willing to be a friend and family. Please note that i have a few applicants for this position but i made you our first choice so i wouldnt appreciate a waste of time. Make sure to include your complete name and zipcode you live and your active cell phone number in your response so i could check the map to read the distance between us so we dont end up being far from oneanother. You may ask questions in case you have any. I await your quick response.
Thank you!

Hello ,how are you doing today.Joes condition isnt actually the permanent one,he could stand on his left leg for about a minute if assisted up but just has problems with the right leg.i would be needing you to help make his meal, help him in going to the restroom ,taking him to fun places around and most importantIy helping him with his school work. I also want to let you know i would be moving into 453-W-143rd-St-C-New-York-NY-10031.so you could check it up online or personally if its close to you because i havent had time to lookup the map myself and if its not let me know asap so i could look for another babysitter for joe. thank you

hello, how are you doing today.i am really happy distance wont be a problem between us both.i want to inform you i would be arriving on the 23rd and since our arrival is less than 2 weeks now i would like if we meet on the same day so we get to know eacother better before you start .I hope i dont bother you with all this requests.i would also like if you could get Joe a little present on the day of our meeting because hes is the shy type and doesnt mix up with people easily but one thing about him is that he loves receiving gifts a lot.i would also be needing your assistance in getting few groceries
because we wont know anywhere around yet and may need few foodstuffs immediately we arrive till we know places over there which i actually think it wont be a problem for you showing us around .i have also made arrangements to get joe a new powered wheelchair because the one he uses over here belongs to the hospital and they dont intend selling it because they only hire it out to their patients who are in need of it.i got a cheaper one in Texas from a company and i had my brother inlaw david place a call to them to have it delivered to you and receive cash from you on delivery .Please understand that the aim of having you purchase the wheelchair is to ensure that the wheelchair is available for joe on arrival and also to have you committed to the job and assurance that youve been hired because i wont want to not have someone available to babysit joe on arrival. The wheelchair isn't assembled. Its still packed in pieces so its not a big package at all and you do not need to assemble it unless you are willing to.The chair cost is $2550 and they would receive $125 for delivery charges.i would instruct my offices account officer to issue out a check for you to deposit into your bank account so you could cover the chair cost when its delivered and also the cost for groceries too.i could also instruct my house agent to send the extra keys of my house to you so incase you dont have a place to put the chair in your house you could drop it of at my place and keep the extra keys for me till i arrive.i would also have a list of the groceries i intend getting e-mailed to you as soon as i have time to sit and make one.i have been really busy with the preparations for the move and also processings for the change of ownership of my house over here.Due to his condition, i wouldn't want any delay with the arrangement of the chair so you can let me know if everything is clear so i can go ahead with processing the payment.I truly hope for the best from you while you look after my son. I will await your mail so i could proceed with having the check for the chair and groceries sent out to you through my office as soon as i get to work.please have your full name and address you want the check addressed to sent to me
also .thanks

Jan 12
will let you know the exact time i will be arriving, would make a list of the groceries you will be getting for joe.The will chair would be delivered once you have the funds available for the check i will be sending to you,so sorry about your dad

I just received the check as well from a woman name Jessica. Everything You wrote is exactly what is happening. I was looking for signs of scamming, so thank you for the post. Her new email is [email protected] phone is (224)-764-7864.
by HillBilly Mon May 18, 2015 10:46 pm
thanks for posting, cynbby92 . I'm sure you know it already, but do not cash the check. It can lead to criminal charges against you. If you received the fake check in the USPS Mail system, report it to your local USPI office. you can find them here : https://ribbs.usps.gov/locators/find-is.cfm take all "proof" that you thought you were doing a legitimate job with you when you file the report..

Do not answer emails from the scammer, do not tell him he is posted here, and be twice as careful about opening any emails you don't recognize for a while. Also if he knows your FB or other account(s) information, do not accept new friend requests from anyone you don't already know.

This JUST happened to me! I (fortunately) decided to check to see if this was a scam before the check was sent to me. The name, number, and E-mail address are one's that haven't been posted on here.

Name: Susan David
Number: 1-914-607-9826
E-mail: [email protected]

Sucks that it wasn't real, but would have sucked even more if my mom didn't have the hunch that this was a scam.

The same thing happened to me. I didn't catch on quick enough and the check was sent to me. I'm smart enough not to cash it. She told me her name was Kimberly. All the other information mentioned was the same about her kid and moving. I've never been scammed before and it literally scared the Heck out of me.
by Tim Atem Fri Jun 05, 2015 6:23 am
I'm sorry this happened to you. As was mentioned above, always meet potential employers face to face. Legitimate employers wouldn't simply hire anyone without meeting them, especially for a caregiver job.

What email/phone numbers is "Kimberly" using?

Recent activity from this apparent scammer using email [email protected]...email looked like...

Thank you for your reply. I am Jennifer Morgan, I`m seeking a responsible nanny to take care of my child in your area. His name is Joe 6 years old. Two Months ago, we went on a vacation but we had an accident on our way back home, as a results of the accident, we lost our Dad(Husband), Joe had a leg fracture accident and he is currently placed on a wheelchair as the specialist recommended. Although; he will be able to do things on his own as he gets stronger but we're just taking the precautive measures given by the specialist to prevent further setbacks. If you re interested in looking after my son, you must be honest and understand that he is my source of joy. I have had hard times after loosing my husband and i would appreciate a proper care for my son Joe.

We are relocating to your area from CA on 20th of August. Is it possible to meet with you on Friday 21st? Just so as to negotiate your daily activities as you look after Joe and also get to know each other in person. You are expected to resume nannying on 22nd of August. Time would be from 9am - 4pm every Saturday and Sundays only. Compensation per weekend is $252. I wouldn't have a problem dropping him off at your place and its fine if you will like to look after him at our place. I will further email you our address in your area.

I will like to run a background check on you. Also i will like you to provide me with your full name as it appears on your ID, complete mailing address including apartment number and your cell phone number. I have a hearing problem so i will only be able to text and email you until we meet. I will like to know if you are available permanently or temporarily. I am also planning to buy Joe a powered wheelchair prior to our arrival for easy movement and precaution measures for setbacks. However, I'll like you to respond to these questions below :

1. How would you describe yourself?

2. why should i hire you?

3. what are your strengths?

4. What are your weaknesses?

5. Do you have a CPR or willing to take the classes going forward?

Please respond back to the questions above and ensure to provide accurate details(Name, Address and Cell Phone #) as requested.

Thanks.

I always check on my clients or try to meet them face to face. be careful out there people.

My daughter was almost scammed by this person. I didn't know about it until she had already given out personal information, but fortunately, I looked at the emails and lots of red flags waved at the conversation about money. We're changing all personal info that we can, and will hand over the check to the attorney general's office if it arrives. Thanks for being out there to warn people.

The name and contact info we got:

thanks for posting, Jalynne and welcome to scamwarners. I'd suggest to you that if the fake check comes through the USPS, then turn it over to the US Postal Inspector's office, not the AG's office. Reason being the PI's office has much more jurisdiction than an AG.

Find your local USPI's office here : https://ribbs.usps.gov/locators/find-is.cfm

If you received the fake check by another carrier, contact the fraud department at that carrier's office and see what they suggest you do.

tell your daughter that Chances are good your scammer is not sophisticated enough to steal your ID, they only wanted your money. They can now impersonate you, though.

You should create some "Google alerts" for all of the personal information given to these scammers. Go to www.google.com/alerts and set up one each for “complete address" , ”bldg # street name" "Drivers license #" "SSN" "FirstName LastName" and "LastName FirstName", “email address”, and what ever other data you have given. be sure to use only one alert per quotation query.

use the quotes " " as above for each one of the alerts they set up with Google. It is not likely the ID will be compromised, but I think its better to err on the side of safe, rather than sorry in this case. If the alerts ever show results, address them at that time.

If it is a passport # then contact homeland security (USA) ( Department of State) and report it compromised to be issued a new passport #. If a different country then contact the issuing authority of that country, and be sure to report it as compromised so you can be issued a new PP #. If they do try anything stupid, you do not want it coming back to haunt you in any way.

You should try to report the scam to your local police, if you are in the USA then also the IC3, and if you are in the UK then actionFraud. If you are not in the US or UK try going to http://econsumer.gov/ and see if yours is a member country.

A woman by the name of Joy Miner texted me and asked me to email her if i was interested in the job. It was a very similar story except it was for pet care. She was moving to town and needed someone to make sure the house was furnished and someone would be set up to care for her dog. Very broken English, hard of hearing mother of one. Willing to pay $500 for the first week and then send me an additional 2100 in advanced to buy the furniture.
