Data Entry job - too good to be true?

I found a listing for an entry level Data Entry clerk on indeed.com

When I tried to go through with the application, it took me to a website called MarketingHire.com, which said that the company involved with this listing was called Toya Rush. I signed up for MarketingHire on the 17th (a week ago), completed the application and submitted my resume and yesterday I received an email with the following message:

Dear Applicant,

Our recruitment team viewed your resume Application : Data Entry Clerk - Full Time/ Part Time) and we are pleased with your qualifications,we believe you have the required qualifications to undergo an online interview.you are required to setup a yahoo mail account (mail.yahoo.com) and a yahoo instant messenger(messenger.yahoo.com)after this process is done,you are to add up Mr Mike Anderson on His yahoo ID ([email protected]) to your yahoo buddy list and Instant Messenger him for the interview Asap for the interview so that you can get Started for the position.Interview schedule: ASAP

Hope to read back from you as soon as possible.

So I did as they instructed, made a new Yahoo email account just for this and began to speak with "Mr. Mike Anderson"

When the interview began, this Mike Anderson told me that the company that's looking to hire me is Access (no mention of Toya Rush)

And he gave me the following details about himself and the job:

I am Mr Mike Anderson,age 54. The personnel manager/Chief Executive Officer of Access Company LTD Please introduce yourself and indicate your age state and city

To know more about the company please visit http://gl.access-company.com ,You have 5 minutes to go through it .once done do let me know so we can proceed further.

The positions available are Data Entry / Administrative Assistant Specialist? / Executive Assistant / Customer Service

The company will be providing you with the funds you will be using in purchasing the software's you will be working with .You will be getting a check mailed to your home via fedex and once you get the check with You are to get the cashier check deposited to your account .


Then after you have deposit it into your account then you are to cash it out and you are to purchase this softwares from the shipping agent who we have been buying from for years now....and means of payment accepted by the vendor is via western union which i will be providing you with the vendors information which you will be using in purchasing the softwares and other needed working materials.

You will be issued a check of $2,250 which you will have to use the funds to purchase your needed working materials from the Vendor, all you are to do when you get the check is to get it depodited into your account and the funds will be available for withdraw within 24hours or less Understood ?

So I ask, do you believe that this is a scam or could it be legit?

It is a scam. The scammer wants to send you a fake check. He will have you deposit the fake check. He is hoping that you and the bank will not notice the fake check.

Once you deposit the fake check he will instruct you to withdraw some of it to purchase his pretend matarials. There is no job and no materials to buy. The scammer himself or his gang is playing all parts of the scam. The scammer will have you send money to 3rd party via Western Union or Moneygram.

Days or weeks later your bank will inform you of the fraud. You will have to repay the monies. Your bank may even close your account and report you to Law Enforcement for fraud.

No company in the World will send an Internet stranger money. Companies do not do interview with Yahoo Messenger. Only scammers do this.

It appears that this scammer is using (Piggy backing) a real company to commit his crime.

It seemed all too good to be true, and I'm glad I didn't go on with it past the point of depositing the check. Problem is they have my mailing information and the check should be here tomorrow, should I just stick it in an envelope and mail it back?

Do you have the tracking number?

When the envelope arrives, refuse delivery tell them their is a fake check in it. You can also give it to your Banks Fraud Dept or the USPS. Print out the emails to give with it.

Do not worry about the scammer having your address. He is most likely in W. Africa. He may continue to contact and send you fake threats. Just ignore him. Do not reply to anything. Eventually he will go away.

No, the person I've been speaking to is supposed to provide me with the tracking number tomorrow morning (I can't believe I got out of bed early for this crap).

Yes, just tell him/her there is a fake check in it. You may want to give him/her a copy of the email you posted here.

Alright, so just print out the email I posted above in bold, got it. Why would I tell them that the account mailing the check was hacked?

Scammers never use their own money to scam. They buy information from hackers. Also if they used real information they would be caught.

I don't know if I should wake up tomorrow morning and carry the conversation until the check gets here, then deny it and sign off Yahoo Messenger, or to not even sign on at all and wait and see if they even deliver it.

Do not sign in. Just stop all communication with him. Do not tell him he is posted or that you know it is a scam. Just leave him guessing.

Hello, I'm the founder and principal of MarketingHire.com and found this forum thread while doing a search related to our site. MarketingHIre.com is a niche job board that specializes in marketing, advertising, social media, pr/communications, marketing research, analytics and search engine marketing jobs. Our site primarily makes its revenue from employers posting jobs. We have customers that range from large global corporations like Microsoft, 3M, Progressive, JWT to small companies. I care a great deal about the experience both job seekers and employers have with our site. Consequently, when I read about cornholiooner's experience with a bogus job posting, I cringed to find this bogus post made it to our site and want to apologize for his experience and share that we identified the bogus job poster, deleted his posts, banned his account (s/he since tried to create numerous new accounts and fake jobs all with fake billing information) and, as a result, have modified our job post review process to do everything possible to stop such postings from appearing on our board in the future.

Unfortunately, these kind of bogus job postings are all too common and can be found on the big general boards and niche ones. In fact, I just discovered that the bogus job mentioned here has been posted on one of our competitor's sites right now and I would expect that we can probably find the postings on some of the big general job sites too. We uncovered the job poster in question a few months ago and deleted all of their postings. As I mentioned, most importantly, to do everything possible to stop these kind of scammers from succeeding in posting again, we looked at and overhauled our review process for new job postings so that every job that is submitted to be posted on MarketingHire.com and the Marketing Career Network (our partners) must now be human reviewed (it's more costly to operate in this manner, but well worth it). I am confident this effectively addresses this issue and ensures a better user experience for job seekers, which of course, as the head of the company, is of great importance to me.

I'd advise all job seekers to avoid submitting bank information or a check to any alleged prospective employer you find for any job posting, whether online or offline. It's simply not something legitimate employers ask for before a job interview, and if something seems suspicious, please don't be embarrassed to ask someone first -- or if you're at our site, feel free to use the contact form and ask us before proceeding. I would be grateful for a job seeker with a poor experience with a company posting at our site who informed me or one of our team members. I have the same experience. I was desperate to look for job online when I got an email from a person claiming to be from the HR Dept of Econocom Inc, even gave me the company's website - www.econocom.com, a European based company. They said they are hiring me for Data Entry Job and would pay 350 EURO Per Week! That got me so excited since they had me sign a contract and had me sent it to them through scan. When they sent me the job instructions, there was an instruction about asking me to download software from this site - www.CudaSoft.net but it costs 60 EURO. I dont have any credit card (which is a good thing) so I sent email to them - [email protected]. They asked me to send them money through Western Union to a certain SHAHID SULTAN S. ALI from Pakistan. And that's when I realized it was all a scam. So be careful with these guys! I'm glad I never sent any money, though I was worried coz they have my signature and my bank account number. Hate myself for being this stupid.

I am happy to hear that you discovered the scam before you lost any money to these criminals. Please post the the email that you received from HR and with the email address and any telephone numbers they may have given to you. Be sure to remove your personal information before posting.

Econocom is genuine; the scammer is piggybacking. As Mike Wilson said, please post the email. Include complete headers, minus your name and address.

we are sending you Employment Contract of Online Client support work
at your residence with this email,


kindly read and fill up the "Employment Contract" (download link at the bottom on Word file)
and after signing this contract send us back by Scan email in maximum 2 working days,


only to email: [email protected]

Along with the contract they also sent me an employee confirmation with a seal and a signature that looks really legit. Anyone desperate for work can be easily deceived.
