Company Representative scams, Payment Processing scams and other Employment scams.
by queenz68 Mon Dec 15, 2014 2:48 pm
I was recently "hired" two weeks ago by a company called New Generation Student Center as an Executive Assistant working from home. Over the past two weeks, I have had two assignments that I had to complete in PowerPoint. I thought everything was ok and wasn't suspicious except for the fact that my "boss" has really horrible grammar and when I googled the company (again) this weekend after being scammed from another work at home position, now all of the sudden someone put up that they are a scam. My only thing is, besides doing some PowerPoint Presentations, what is the purpose of the scam other than getting my bank account information (for direct deposit) but there isn't any money in there because I'm counting on them paying me. Their website is www.newgscenter.com and my supposed supervisor's name is Maria Sikal. This company is supposedly located at 201 Monmouth Ave. N., Monmouth, OR 97361 and the phone number is 503-483-4070. They also supposedly have an Easter Europe Branch at 74 Rue Louis Pasteur, 84 029, Avignon, France and that number is +331-431-7-5775. I'm really disgusted that people are going out of their way to prey on people who actually want to work and need jobs, but I haven't figured out what this scam is about yet. Can anyone help, or has anyone heard anything

Please post the emails you have received from this "employer"(removing your personal information first), including the complete headers. If you don't know how to retrieve the complete headers, look at the link under my post.

it does not seem very reliable. The mailing address does not exist, the phone # ( in the US) is a VOIP #.
http://www.wou.edu/provost/se/contact.php
The SEP Office is located at the south end of the 154 acre campus on the corner of North Monmouth Ave. and Jackson St.
This happens to be what would also be the address of 201 N. Monmouth.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/201+M ... 9?hl=en-US

They can use your bank account to wire funds ( transfer funds) into for money laundering purposes. They can just use it against you as blackmail leverage that they will abuse your personal information. without more information from you about your "job description" its hard to tell what else they can do.

Its best to go close your bank account, and reopen another one with different #'s on it. Stop contact with these scammers now.

Since they can't speak / write English very well, they supposedly "hire" you to correct their mistakes to make their fake websites and other scams appear legitimate. You will likely never see any compensation for your "work", and if you do, it will be in the form of a fake check, or illicit funds.

The site itself was created a week or 2 ago, is only registered for one year, and has hidden registration details. all 3 of those combined almost always = a scam site.

In a money mule scam, the scammers will assign you the "task" of receiving money into your bank account and either forwarding it to another account, or withdrawing the money and wiring it somewhere.

The money transferred into your account will come from the phished or hacked accounts of innocent parties. You will be acting as a "mule" - an intermediary who provides an extra step between the thief and his crime. In this scenario, what you are doing is money laundering, which is a serious crime.

Sometimes scammers recruiting mules will assign a few seemingly innocent tasks before they move on to the money transfer requests, in order to disarm suspicion.

I did notice the terrible English that's in this email, but I've had other supervisors who pretty much needed to spellcheck things before. Do you want the other "assignments" she's asked me to perform? Also she had me set up a Yahoo IM account so that she can keep up with my time. Her IM address is [email protected]

Dotti,
Thanks for explaining what a money mule scam is. So now this last email I received on Friday 12/12 is beginning to make sense then. Would you agree that's what they intended on doing?

"When you are dealing with packages just as with any other documents you should be very detail oriented. If you know what to do and where to look for the info then this task will be easy for you. I will supply you with all the necessary info as well as postage labels. Information that is being sent to you by me is 100 authentic with the info that appears on the package. Here is the pattern of the info that you will receive before the package arrives: Tracking Number: --- Number that identifies your package. It's being used by the delivery service to identify and trace shipments as they move through the system of the delivery service to it's destination. Delivery service automatically assigns a tracking number to your shipment.

Post Company: USPS/UPS/Fedex/etc. In this field will be the name of the company or courier that will deliver you the package Track link: --- A link of an official web-site where by using a tracking number you will be able to obtain info on where is your package at the moment.

Name on Package: Stated the name of a New Generation Students Center associate who processed the order. It's done to avoid lost of package in our system.

Weight: Pay Attention!!!: the weight measures always in pounds. You as a professional should always confirm the weight listed on the delivery service's official web-site(when you track the package this info will appear along with other info, make sure you write it down) to the weight on the package.

Scheduled Delivery: this info you can always confirm with me. This date may vary due to the holidays, wether conditions or other Force Major forces, but I will always keep you informed. It is important in the day of the delivery stay at home until you get the package. If you miss the package it may course the violation of the delivery schedule and it may lead to a unpleasant consequences.

When you receive the package take the following action:
1) Make a picture of the item that you received. Inspect it for the possible damages. Write a brief description of the item - it's quantity and quality in the body of the letter. Make sure that the file that you attach to the e-mail is not corrupted, well readable and not fuzzy.
2) Scan or make a picture of all the documents and invoices that comes along the package and put them away (I suggest you to make a special folder and keep them in it. !!!PAY ATTENTION: all the documents that come to you in the package are for internal use only and strictly intended for the New Generation Students Center associates only. Do not resend them or attach to the package.)
3) Make sure that all files are readable before sending it to my e-mail.
4) Wait for the confirmed information on the intended recipient from your supervising manager.

thanks for the additional information. There is no reason for a real business to require yahoo IM ( Or any other IM) program "to keep track of time". Emails or phone calls can do the same thing. The only real difference is that IM programs are not traceable, nor are their conversations. Interesting, isn't it??

This is a re-shipping / money mule scam operation, there is no doubt.

Stay away from these people for your own benefit. Read this article about scammers and their scam websites to help you understand how to protect yourself. : http://419advancefeefraud.blogspot.com/ ... their.html

by queenz68 Mon Dec 15, 2014 6:47 pm
HillBilly,
That's crazy that IM isn't or can't be traced since it's "live." I'm glad I didn't do anymore that the two assignments and didn't get into sending stuff. I'm going to close my bank account in the morning and get a new one. Luckily I didn't fill out any W2 or I9 forms with them so they don't have my SS#. However, they do have my address.
by Terminator5 Mon Dec 15, 2014 6:56 pm
The way i'm reading this scam is note the singular reference to a package {1} . So its not a reshipping scam .

From the Email:

"When you receive the package take the following action:"

"all the documents that come to you in the package are for internal use only and strictly intended for the New Generation Students Center associates only"

The package probably contains fake checks or money orders.

From the job description:

5. Providing assistance and support to students, host families and schools throughout the length of the program. Act as a back-up in the event of an emergency. For example, by finding temporary place to stay such as cheap hostel.

7. Organize housing for students, meal and transportation.

very interesting , indeed. Especially considering that unless your alias here is anything close to your legal name, then they have zero chance of spotting you as their person. Unless of course you are the only person in the world that "works" for them. Then they have a reasonable assumption.

and btw, queenz68, for your own protection I would be sure to go into yahoo IM preferences, and turn on "log every IM" ( or something similar to that). It won't make a copy with the Yahoo servers ( like email does), but just having it might be useful. Its always better to have it and not need it, than it is to need it, and not have it, IMO. The logs are simple text files, don't take up much room on your PC, and if you want to delete them later, you can.
