Hi there,
I just got a mail from this person this week and figured it had to be a scam so I looked it up and your fantastic community popped up. I am posting the following things so that we can keep track of this person. I also did send a reply before I looked things up to inquire more about the job so when I get that email I shall post it as well. Thanks for being around, you have saved me a few times.

Thank you for posting..

I received the exact emails as you guys.. I almost fell for it. Good thing I checked on google first. It is horrible what they are doing.

It was too good to be true. I have been a victim of something like this around 2008. I received a check and my bank account has accepted the check. I have a credit score so I was able to withdraw my 10%. After 2 days, I received a phone call. The guy was saying that if I give them 500 pounds in advance (because they need the money asap) they will give me more checks, more checks means more money.

I was waiting for the whole check too go through first before I could send the money to them. I told them I do wish I have 500 pounds but I don't. After a week the check bounced and I went overdrawn. I gave the police all the copy of emails that I have received from them plus my cellphone to check where the call is coming from but the police wasn't able to do anything about it. Why is that?

Welcome to ScamWarners ssmetham.

I'm sorry to hear that you lost some money from this scam, but it is a good thing that you realised from your research that it was a scam before you lost much more.

The scammer is probably in a different country to you, and using a false name, with an email address set up with fake information, and a disposable phone number, probably also registered with false information - so very difficult, and maybe impossible, to track down.

But even if that was possible, your own country's police force are likely to be unable to do anything about a criminal breaking the law in another country.

Nonetheless, this scamming activity will now be on record, giving your country a clearer picture of how people are targets of this type of crime. So it was not a wasted report, but one that may be of statistical use in the future.
by Dotti Fri Jun 18, 2010 1:24 pm
Welcome ssmetham,

I'm glad you were able to avoid being scammed again. The truth is, there is no such thing as a legitimate job at home sending or processing payments using your own bank account. Whether the job involves printing checks, cashing checks, or receiving and forwarding Western Union, credit card payments, or bank transfers, it is a scam! In addition, any legitimate job that involves handling valuable merchandise (i.e. reshipping) is not going to be offered without a real application, interview, reference check, and/or credit check--no legitimate company is going to trust a perfect stranger not to steal!

As to why the police couldn't do anything the last time, it is probably because of how these scams work. If you received the check from someone in your country, that person was likely another victim, either a romance scam victim or a job scam victim who thought that he/she was printing and sending payments for a legitimate company. If the police tracked that person, they would have discovered it was part of this larger scam, and the trail would lead to Africa or Malaysia, well outside of their jurisdiction. At this point, the police would be unable to proceed any further.

and all they did was send me the contract. I can handle them trying to scam me, but I object to the fact that they don't read an email I took some time to compose! Still, at least it was well written unlike most of the ones in broken English I receive.

Hi Andy and welcome to Scamwarners

While I understand your intentions, we would prefer if you didn't reply to scammers without some knowledge on how to do so safely and without teaching the scammer about how to make his scam more believable.

Trust me, they are good enough at scamming without you making it that bit easier for them by giving scamming tips. If you are interested in deliberately communicating with scammers, take a look at www.419eater.com where they can teach you some tricks to ensure you stay safe, ruin scammer's lives and have some fun in the process

The first thing to note about the job offer is that it never describes what you'll actually be doing.

Of course, if they specified that you'd be cashing counterfeit cheques through your bank account it wouldn't get too many replies as it's not hard to work out who'll benefit financially from that arrangement, and who will end up in deep trouble.

The mail from the scammer is well written and could easily attract people looking for work. The trick the scammer is using is to obtain your agreement before you know what you're agreeing to.

There is no such thing as a job that involves receiving cheques for a company. The thing you have to be able to spot is when a job offer is going to turn out to be just another scammer trying to trick you into passing counterfeit cheques for him.

It's worth doing some research before you respond to any job offer to avoid wasting your time.
