Your personal details were never what they were after and it's unlikely they'll attempt to do anything with them. They can't make transfers or give instructions without your signature or passwords, so it doesn't give them the ability to perform a fraud.
They just ask those things to make themselves sound plausible and if they can get personal information out of someone it's got you ready for the next step.
You've avoided the major catastrophe which would involve you in depositing counterfeit cheques into your account, losing money and ending in dispute with your bank and the police. Believe me - what you've avoided is good reason to celebrate. It might be an idea to mention to your bank what happened and follow their advice. They'll be pleased you spotted it before you took it further, as this sort of situation is a major problem to them too.
Mail the scammer and tell him you are no longer interested in the job. He'll pester you but if you ignore him he'll go elsewhere, but you'll get more scams to look out for.
