Company Representative scams, Payment Processing scams and other Employment scams.

Background Info: I've been looking for employment on Monster.com and Indeed.com, as well as other job listing websites. I spent one day applying for numerous positions that I thought I even had a small chance of receiving, if not likely. Thus I honestly do not remember all the jobs I applied for. However I received an email about a position as a Part Time Personal Assistant. I know I had been applying for assistant positions, but did not truly remember this one. Part of me thinks it is a scam, however the email contained a copy of the cover letter and resume link I provided to the jobs I applied for.

Additional Info: I left out the part of my cover letter and resume, as I considered it personal information.

I did reply back to this email, which may be a red flag in hindsight, since I thought "if they have my resume they have this info already." I tried to search for the company, but got not hits as a company or scam. Today I have received a Cashier's check in the amount of $2880.00. I have not deposited the money, and since the email did seem to have legitimacy, I have instead tried to reach the person.

Update: I have spoken to this person over the phone, and he told me to deposit the check. I still am tepid about doing that. I asked why I was receiving a check before a position, his exact response was "Let your mind be at rest."

Please advise whether this is a scam or not. Thank you.

Yes, it is an absolute scam. The check will be a fake check. He will have you deposit it and then wire money to him. The bank will find out days to even weeks later that the check is fake and you will be on the hook for all the money and could potentially face criminal charges.

That number is in Maryland, not the Midwest. The scammer is African. The email is a bog-standard personal assistant script.

Do not deposit or cash the check. Do not say anything more to the scammer. Be dead, as far as he can tell.
