Company Representative scams, Payment Processing scams and other Employment scams.

This was a reply from a job I applied to on authenticjobs.com - but they are apparently fairly on the ball, because the post has already been taken down. Wish I'd noted the original text to include here, but I recall it was a pretty basic Admin Assistant job.

While the context, syntax and strange font/color changes in the email were a dead giveaway, I did do a quote search on some key text. And I found this is a variant on an existing scam, primarily attributed to a Sgt. John Michels who claims to be the owner of Anne's Memorial Gallery.

XXXX,

Thanks for getting back to me, I'm happy to receive your application from
our recruiters, I have gone through your posted resume and i will consider
you for the position. I am looking forward to work with a reliable and
multitask individual. My aim and intention is to be able to restrict myself
to painting alone while I have someone else who will handle all sales
and customer service aspect of the business. My late wife used to handle
all sales before, but i lost her to cancer last year and this has slowed
down the business for a while, coupled with the fact that I am always busy
at work. I am only trying to revive the business and bring it online so
that the business can continue even when i am not available. I have just
been deployed on a brief tour and I am just getting settled here. This is
why I need to bring my art online by setting up an online gallery. Your
involvement in this business venture will be very limited for a start, but
you will get more involved gradually over time in order to give room for
you to learn the basics. This is a home based assignment with flexible
hours, you will be working at your convenient time within the required time
frame.
But For now, while I will respond to all client inquiries and provide them
with all information needed such as price list, sizes and history behind
every painting, I will refer them to you to complete the sale if the buyer
still wants to proceed. All you have to do is to coordinate packaging,
reproductions, receive payment and shipping. You will be working along with
my printer who will be making the prints, packaging them and shipping.
I am offering to pay $400 weekly (Payment will be made every Fridays) for a
start with no benefits and of course I bear all cost. But hope to add
benefits and retirement in the near future as the business expands. I
market my arts through agents and galleries and usually get between 8 to 15
inquiries in a week and out of this, 3 to 5 of them ends up buying while
the rest might delay purchase or look elsewhere thus you will only be
dealing with those who wants to buy only. You will also mail an invoice to
the buyer after payment and keep record of all sales.
I would want you to find a local printer who can make prints for us (Though
I think you might not be ready for that now) so that you can pick up
directly from the printer, package it and post/ship personally. My printer
handles this for me and his service is quite expensive.
Later in the future, you will have to set up a merchant account ( I will
walk you through the process and it is free to set up.) but before that,
please let me know when you will be ready to start working and if the terms
explained above is clear to you.
Lastly I want to know if you have any special interest or passion for art
or if you are just taking this job for the extra income. (This is not a
requirement for this job, but just to know you better).
Like I stated earlier, this does not require you to make any
payment/investment and I would be setting up a meeting with you as soon as
I return, this is very important.
Please let me stress that my job gives little room for online browsing and
I might be very difficult to reach sometimes when I have a
special assignment, but this does not happen all the time. I have to go now
to attend to other issues while I wait for your response.
Hope to have your response soon.
--
James Craig
