I truly wish to thank the wonderful folks here at ScamWarners for all of the diligence and hard work you all do to keep this site going. ScamWarners is truly a very valuable tool and I have encouraged everyone I know to register.
Recently I had dinner with some folks that I used to work with who sadly all lost their jobs due to the company downsizing. The conversation soon turned to how someone can determine if a position posted on a job board is legit or a scam. Sadly, many scammers use legit job boards such as Glassdoor and Monster and even use professional sites like Linkedin to post fake ads. In most of these cases it is nearly impossible to tell that an ad is a scam because it looks so professional and polished. You will find out it's a scam once the scammer contacts you. In most cases you will be contacted via e-mail stating that they received your resume in response to the ad on such and such a site and would like to move forward with an interview. I shared with them the following that I learned from ScamWarners that are dead giveaways that it is a scam:
1) You are advised to set up a Google Chat or some other chat service and then add such and such a person. No legit company will EVER conduct an interview via Chat or hire you without ever meeting you
2) If you do move forward via chat and are advised that you "Will be receiving a check via express service to purchase the necessary software / equipment needed for the position". In many cases you are even asked which bank you use. There are 2 reasons for this question. #1 is that the check you receive will be fake and they want to make sure the check they send you is not from "Your Bank". #2 is that most commercial banks will clear a check within 24 hours of deposit. You deposit the check, see it "cleared" the following day and the deposited funds are available. You're then advised to withdraw a specific amount in cash and either go to another bank and deposit the cash into someones account or forward the cash via Western Union. You are told the person you are sending the cash to is the company's purchasing agent and they are purchasing the necessary materials on your behalf. By the time you find out the check was returned by the issuing bank as being counterfeit it's too late. Think about it, no Legit company would simply send you a check without ever having meeting you. If you use a savings bank most of them require at least a 5 day hold on checks. Usually when you are asked this question, if you advise that you use a savings bank they suddenly stop contacting you.
Thank you ScamWarners for helping to keep us all safe!
