This is the message I've received from Career Builder. People going through Career Builder resumes and trying to lure people into their scam. If you fall for this, you could get in serious trouble bec the bank account where payments are processed would be under YOUR name. I've done some research with this sort of emails and found a multitude of people online giving others warning.

Be careful bec the emails and the name of the person claiming to be from HR will vary, but the main points are the same. Anyone asking you to open a bank account on their behalf is NOT a legitimate company offering legitimate positions. Don't fall for it.

I just had a phone conversation with "Mary Kay" who called from the number 845-943-4477. She told me that the bank account number that would be set up would only be used during the training, that I would be the only one that has access, and that I don't have to send in a copy of my ID until the training period is over. I am really curious as to how exactly this scam works if that is really the case. Has anyone read through the contract? If I do send it in signed, would I be legally responsible for anything? I am really curious and want to send it in just to see what the "training materials" are. Any suggestions as to how I should handle the situation? I want to try to catch them, scam them, or at least mess with them if they really are scammers.

P.S. The website does look pretty legit. I went on there and sent the following email under the "contact us" tab:

"I received an email about a possible job opportunity with your company from a Mary Kay (email address [email protected]) offering an assistant manager position. I also received an agreement form that outlined a pay structure and a somewhat vague explanation of the responsibilities, and was asked to return it with a copy of my ID. Is this a legitimate job offer from your company, or someone posing as a representative? I have exchanged several emails with Mary Kay, who has also given me phone numbers to call, but have had no luck getting in touch. If this is a legitimate offer, I am interested in learning more. I have a few questions and concerns that I would like to have resolved, and would like to get in touch with someone there.

Otherwise, I just wanted to make you aware of a potential scam with you company's name attached to it.

Thank you"

and a few days later, I got the following reply:

"Mary Kay is a HR coordinator of MS Co. If you have any questions or complaints regarding her, please let us know.

Thanks for your mail. We really appreciate it.

Have a nice day!"

My reply email to them elicited the phone call.

As far as signing the contract goes--I would not sign it. Their real purpose is money laundering--their plan is to steal money from other bank accounts or credit cards, transfer it into your account, and have you forward the stolen money to them. If you signed a contract and did nothing, they can't exactly come after you for it (they aren't in the same country, and even if they were, what are they going to do--go to the police and complain that you are not performing the illegal activities that you agreed to perform for them?) But there is no reason to put yourself in a position where you might look like you are a willing participant in illegal activities, and that signed contract, in the hands of the wrong person, could make you look like a willing accomplice - and money laundering is a very real crime that comes with a stiff sentence.

She told me that the bank account number that would be set up would only be used during the training

Very true. By the time the "training" is over, the fraudulent activity will be detected, you will be in hot water, and the account will be frozen or closed.

that I would be the only one that has access,

putting you in the position of looking even more guilty of being both a thief and a money launderer, leaving you to be responsible for paying back the money they stole, plus hundreds of dollars or more in fines/fees, and putting you at very real risk for criminal prosecution.

and that I don't have to send in a copy of my ID until the training period is over.

Simply because the way this scam works, they don't need your ID.

Since these people presumably know your real life details, do not mess with them. Just drop them and walk away.

So, heres my take on this:
So, whats the salary, make up your mind? 4.5k or 5k? Gee, didn't know Mrs. Clarkson had a second job... guess the first isn't paying well enough, not! At will employment, I thought this was a contracted salary job. Bi-Weekly on a Salary, Hell No, your paying me weekly sucker on a Salary! Oh yea, the Freudian Slip, "you could share valuable contribution" A classic. And last, I guess Mrs. Clarkson is beyond stupid, as the list in question is readily answerable via my resume which is a document given to her on CB! All those items on that document... :laugh-s:

Not to mention the IP Address lookup and tracking that those beautiful sites shown me. Hmmm email from Atlanta Georgia and is located in California. See for yourself, I guess they get credit for keeping it in the continental US.

Thank you for helping spread a word of caution about these types of messages! Based on the information listed within your original post, the message in question does appear to be a payment processing (shipping) scam. It also appears to be a spoof message designed to appear as if it came from a legitimate source or 3rd party company in order to lend it credibility.

We recommend such messages be disregarded and any current or future correspondence attempts related to the message be ignored.
