Company Representative scams, Payment Processing scams and other Employment scams.

Im not sure if this belongs in employment or advanced fee but here goes:
I applied to a modeling gig on line and was booked for the job. No money was asked for upfront, im aware of the bs those wreak of.
Upon further conversations I was told that the studio had to be paid for with a check sent to myself for $2,850. I was to remove my partial advanced fee payment of $250 and send the rest to the studio owner via western union. The day rate Id be paid after completion of the shoot is $1,450. (standard rate) I wondered why the person writing couldnt cash it himself but figured maybe hes not valid to work here?(USA) (happens quite a bit in the arts)
Anywho, the weird thing is that the person/studio owner im to send the money to is literally 30 minutes from where i live. How could this be a scam if their address is so local to mine?
Further info-Once i book the studio the job will be confirmed in two days. The check will be arriving today via courier and I've yet to receive it. What should I do when it does? does it sound fishy or am i just paranoid?

Thanks!

I'll lock this one to keep the discussion in one place.

Have you sent a payment to a scammer with Western Union and now realize it's a scam? If the payment has not been picked up, you can cancel it immediately! 1-800-448-1492
