Hello,
I'm Susie from S. Korea. Recently I met an American man on My Space. His name is Franklin Johnson and email address is [email protected]. According to him, he is living in Miami and a regional director in Royal Dutch Shell. He went to Malaysia six days ago to make a huge contract with Petronase, the major oil company in Malaysia. Based on his information, he made that contract which awarded him 80% of the total amount which is 25millions US dollars. He said, he was in the urgent situation to open the account in Malaysia so that Petronase could pay him money. Yesterday, he asked me to help him send 700 US dollars to open the account. I very much suspect he is a scammer definitely. I do not believe he was awarded such that huge contract. I totally do not understand Petronase would pay 80% of contracted amount to a person directly. I only met him online. We have never met in person. I do not get how come he asked me to send him money and why he does not have such little money like 700 US dollars. To me, he is almost a stranger. We have only chatted for about a week and he hardly called my name while chatting. He even asked me to marry him. What a weird guy! I do believe he is a total scammer. It would be highly appreciated if you kindly give me some important comment or advices by return.

Welcome Susie,

You are certainly correct. Someone who is making millions of dollars on major oil contracts (which is already an unlikely scenario) would not need to ask perfect strangers on the internet for $700. The scenario you are describing is typical of an African romance scammer, and the reference to Malaysia makes it even more clear. There is a large cell of African romance scammers operating in Malaysia.

What this means is that the person writing to you is not American. He is not the person in the photos he sent you. He is a young African man who has created this fake identity to steal money from women.

The best thing you can do is drop him and walk away. Don't bother to confront him, as he will only tell you more lies. Don't point out any mistakes he made--he will use that information to scam better the next time. Don't answer any emails, chat requests, or phone calls. Blocking his profile on myspace too will help.

If you can post the first few messages he sent you (remove your information first) here, it would help other victims, because scammers often send the same scripted messages to many different victims-so finding his messages here may help someone else to avoid losing money.
